Heathrow - My greatest fear. |
|
Hi, I am hoping to visit London in April/May next year. And I was hoping you can help with some tips to survive Heathrow. |
|
What do you mean - do you expect trouble? We've been through heathrow 18 times, let's see every time we either landed or departed, everything was pretty straight forward. 1. land 2. collect baggage 3. proceed through Customs/Immigration or 1. check-in 2. go through security/Customs/Immigration 3. board plane 4. take-off for destination Heathrow is like any large airport - every day/flight is different - just hope yours is not out of the ordinary.

Amazing You come from Pretoria and you are scared of what might happen at Heathrow
|
What exactly is worrying you about Heathrow? The worst that's likely to happen is that your patience will be severely tested... Or are you scared of flying so the whole airport experience is stressful?
|
Agree with everyone here. I've never had any problems at Heathrow. Your time at Heathrow is just a very minute part of your holiday. I'm always glad to arrive at Heathrow - I know another great London holiday awaits! When I leave I'm already planning the next visit.

There are lots of signs and its not hard to find your way around. Can you be more specific about your concerns.

At one time in my life, I swore I would never fly in an airplane. Giving up the control of "driving" freaked me out. But secretly, my worst fear was getting lost in the airport, missing my flight and being told by the airline "tuff tooties you are out a gazillion $$". I confided in an online friend from Scotland that my real fear was of the airort, not the plane. He simply told me to "follow the arrows Rebecca, follow the arrows." And so I did. Now I am a pro at navigating through crowds and lines and all the entails.

Heathrow ~> you can do it. Just remember that you're in charge, you're the adult in the relationship, and that the airport must respect your authority (oh dear, I seem to have turned into Cartman). It's a big place, so getting from one side to the other can take some time. If you have to connect from a flight at T4 to T1 you'll take a bus ride that seems to go all around the houses - but the convoluted journey is necessary because the airport is on a relatively small footprint. Signage at LHR is quite good, all things considered. Even though there are a few point to point walks that feel like a he!! of a schlep, you really can get there from here, as it were. There are areas in the terminal buildings with low ceilings, less than brilliant lighting, and other signs of wear and tear - but that adds to the appeal in a strange way. Considering that it operates at about 98% capacity every day it's open, it's amazing that it has held up so well for so long.

You know, given my 'druthers, I'll take Heathrow over Sydney any day LOL I've found Heathrow when busy much easier than Sydney. I've arrived at Heathrow first thing in the morning and also in the mid-afternoon and both times, although the queues were long, everything went smoothly. I agree with the other posters' suggestions - follow the arrows and everything is well- signed. When checking in, of course, allow plenty of time but that goes without saying really.

Well, if Heathrow is your greatest fear, you must lead a charmed life!
