Normandy to Southampton |
|
Hi Everyone, We are arriving in Paris on 10/4/08 and would like to go to Normandy for 2 days ( 10/6 and 10/7). We need to be in Southampton by Wednesday 10/8/08. What is the best way to get there? We are thinking about taking the ferry (Brittany Ferries? or is there anything better way ? )from Caen to Portsmouth.. would this be the best way to get to Southampton without having to go back to Paris and London just to get to Southampton? I believe Portsmouth is about 15 miles to Southampton. Does anyone know if there are cabs readily available in Portsmouth to travel to Southampton? Thanks |

There will be cabs at the ferry port. You can also get the shuttle bus to the station and get a (frequent) train

yes, I think this is the best way to get to S'oton. It's easy to get here from Portsmouth. A taxi might be quite expensive, but the train is also very easy, frequent and direct. I am sure there will be a taxi rank at the ferry dock, but if not, worse case scenario there are cabs at the train station as well.

Just to make sure I am being clear...we want to end up in Southampton. None of these ferries go there directly...correct?

The French ferries only go to Portsmouth. Frequent trains between there and So'ton. There is another service from Cherbourg which is quicker but a longer drive from Bayeux and Caen. Note that the ferry port in France is at Ouistreham which is several miles from Caen. Caen is in the area of the British invasion beaches and a few miles east of Omaha etc. The remains of the mulberry harbour are at Arromanches in between.

Hi the above is from Railenthusiast....I never knew there was and area of the "British Invasion" is there an area known as the "American Invasion" or does the "British" cover all the allies? We are thinking of taking the 2 day tour from Paris..I am not sure what city or the hotel the tour company puts you up in. We are hoping that there is enough to see the second day with the tour guide and then hopefully take the ferry to Southampton instead of going all the way back to Paris with the guide. I do want to thank every one so much with all your help in this!

"I never knew there was and area of the "British Invasion" is there an area known as the "American Invasion" or does the "British" cover all the allies?" "British Invasion area" might mean only the area where the Brits went ashore, or it might mean everything including where the Americans landed as well, it all depends on the author and the context.

So are we all agreed that the ferries don't go to Southampton then? :-)

Train from all Portsmouth railway stations to Southampton Central is around 7 GBP per person or you could get the 'Solent Shuttle' which is a fast bus link between Southampton and Portsmouth and costs just over 5 GBP www.swtrains.co.uk - Trains www.solentshuttle.info - Bus Taxi's are available but you could end up paying around 40 GBP or greater which is a bit pricey although if you are in a small group it might end up being the best option! It's always worth asking the taxi drivers for a fixed rate.

To quote from a the site below: American forces landed at Utah and Omaha beaches. British soldiers landed at Gold Beach and Sword Beach on each side of the Canadian force, which landed at Juno Beach. The most difficult and deadly invasion beach was Omaha, due in part to the heavy defenses and challenging topography of the area. See thereareplaces.com/Guidebook/…dday1.htm The first paratroop landings were at Pegasus Bridge which is near Ouistreham ferry port.
