Can anyone who has travelled from NY to Southampton on the QM2 please advise what extra costs are involved, I was told that a cheap fare ends up being quite costly after all the extra hidden costs, like buying a BMW before the extras are tacked on. I am going early Sept what are the conditions like, will sea sickness be a problem? |

Can't help other than to give a link to reviews of QM2 cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/…

From my understanding the price you pay is for everything on board including food. But it excludes:
- internet use - all drinks (I think the Kings Lounge is the exception with juice, coffee and tea available for free with the breakfast buffet only) - any spa treatments - eating at the Todd English restaurant (small surcharge is applied) - tips
*Tips - a daily charge will be put onto your account so that you don't have to tip people. It's based on which room you are staying in:
• Grill Categories Q1 - Q7, P1 - P3 $13 (approx £7.00) per person per day • Britannia Categories AA - A3, B1 - B6, C1 - C4, D1 - D8 $11 (approx £6.00) per person per day

I have really struggled to find any information on weather for when we travel on Wednesday. I get sea sick so I am taking some tablets with me, but it's such a big ship that we shouldn't really feel a thing.

You are crossing the Atlantic; it's a big, big sea and can be rough. At the very least, expect a rolling, Atlantic swell which the QM2 will ride very well. As to sea-sickness, one of my daughters used to get very sick on an ice smooth Greek sea. My wife and I, however, have been eating meals while all around us crashed and broke. Whatever you do, do not be caught with an empty stomach, that makes it worse. They will issue tablets aboard if they expect anything medium to bad. Wasn't it only a couple of weeks ago that a P&O ship had a very bad time off Australia? That was a large cruise ship BUT not as large as the QM2. Don't worry too much and enjoy. Some people will indeed feel a bit queasy but that's more likely to be overindulgence the evening before. You will spend a lot, if you're not careful, wines and spirits can eat up a lot of cash. You don't pay cash at the time so some people get a shock at the end of the cruise/voyage.

When booking a transatlantic crossing in the UK, there are no 'hidden costs' everything which is included or not is stated in the brochures and is stated as the review above. Yes you could get carried away with drinks etc, but with the favourable rate of the US Dollar makes these very reasonable and you can check your onboard account daily if necessary. Crossing the atlantic can be hit or miss anytime of the year, I have known people to cross in November and been able to sunbathe on some days!! However, if your gonna cross the atlantic you have choosen the right ship! You may suffer on the first couple of days if your unlucky so stock up on kwells and as the other reply says donot have an empty tummy! (WOuld be hard on QM2). If it gets really bad you can pay for the injection and you will instantly feel fine!

I don't know if you are still travelling Cogoart, but I have just come back from my Southampton to NY cruise on the QM2. We had an excellent time but were very unlucky with the weather. At times it was a bit foggy but on Saturday 16th Aug we experienced gale force 11 winds and were not allowed to go outside. Then as a complete contrast it was a beautiful warm sunny day on Monday 18th! My tip is to pack a long pair of trousers, a jumper and a windbreaker just in case. At the very worst you cna buy fleeces etc onboard. In addition to the costs I mentioned in my previous post I found the following: *All drinks had 15% added on the bill. *Some of the gym classes were free but for a one-off fee of $30-50 (I can't remember exactly) you have a wider selection of classes. *The art classes charged a one off fee of around $30 for materials. *The Cunard photographers take photos every night for free. There is no obligation to buy, but if you do the price starts at $27.50.

I have traveled on most of Cunards ships including the QM2. What extras are you talking about? Even in the lower price staterooms you will enjoy the same ambience as everyone else...you will not be able to eat in the Queen's Grill but compared to the QE2..I was not impressed with the QM2's version. Of course they add on for the daily tipping, and you will pay for all your drinks, bingo, spa, etc. ALWAYS take sea sickness medication whenever you can. Even the saltiest sea dogs (like me) can have that little "pea" inside your head go off and then you're done. I use Bonine versus Dramimine. Bonine will not zap your strength as much. The ship used to have an injection you could pay for...was $60 the one time I took it. You sleep for about 4 hours and then it is suppose to keep you well for three days I believe. Forgive any spelling errors....the mind works faster than the fingers....BEST OF LUCK!

I've not travelled with Cunard but I work as coach driver in London. The company I work for are contracted by numerous internatonal travel companies including Intercruises and Vantage World Travel among others and we regularly transfer passengers from Southampton to London hotels and vice versa. Often we transfer passengers directly from Southampton to Heathrow Airport or the other way around. It's best to check with the company you are booking with to ensure that ALL transfers, necessary overnight accomodation in London and transport to the airport to fly home is inclusive.
