Hi

I am after some advice please.

My brother in law, myself and our partners are taking the in-laws to Jersey for the weekend Friday 26th to Monday 29th September.

It is an 80th birthday present for Father in Law and we would like to take him on the German Occupation Tour or Trail.

Both in-laws are reasonably active for their age and have good mobility, however, they are 78/80 so there are certain limits certainly, nothing too strenuous although walking on the flat, slight incline is OK.

We are on the midday flight on Friday and the late afternoon one on Monday.

We have nothing else planned or booked.

Therefore I am after various ideas about occupation trips, do I book an organised one, is there more than one that covers the different sites. Or is it better to try to arrange something ourselves.

Budget isn't limitless but we would like a reasonable hotel. Is it better just to book B & B then eat out in the evening or book BB&EM, as we would like to go for a good meal one evening at least.

Where would be a good place to go for the celebratory meal, there would be a need for it to be convenient to the Hotel, ideally short walking distance.

As there are six of us would it be better to hire a car/van or use public transport.

I appreciate this request is not too specific but feel free to offer a suggested itinerary, brother in law and I enjoy certain off the wall things and none of us have visited Jersey before, and we can always let the in-laws look at the sea while we go and do our own thing.

Thanks for any assistance.

regards

David

I would have thought some of our resident Jersey posters would have replied by now but anyway I'll start the ball rolling by suggesting that if nothing else at least go the War Tunnels/Underground Hospital.

The tunnels themselves are all on one level and the cafe in the reception area has a lift if they can't manage the stairs.

Forgot to tell you we stayed at the Pomme d'Or Hotel in St Helier. We took advantage of their 3 nights for the price of 2 offer so if you can get that in late September I'd certainly recommend it.

Hi

The Somerville at St Aubin might be a good place to stay . Its in a very good position with lovely views over St Aubins harbour and within walking distance,if you felt like wandering down in the evening ,for a drink or a stroll around around the harbour itself . If you were looking for a restaurant for a celebratory meal then Cheffins is very nice .Its just down near the harbour and again would be in easy walking distance from the Hotel.

I would definately hire a car its not difficult driving on Jersey and I'm sure it would make life easier for you . Have a look at easyCar.com their prices are very competitive !

You can find plenty on info regarding things to do on Jersey . There are books to pick up at the airport with suggestions and a welcoming pack is always included in your Hire car with everything you will need to know for a good holiday ! Have a look on jersey.com too its full of all sorts of interesting info and just read as much as you can on this web site .

Thank You WaltR and Devoncatswhiskers

I tried to book The Sommerville on the net and was told there was no availability.

I have booked the Pomme d'Or Hotel although the net told me no availability so I telephoned instead, looks like it was a 3 for 2 offer although they only quoted the overall price.

Will also take the advice and hire a car, although as we are now staying in St Helier I may need another suggestion for the restaurant, if you have one I would be much obliged.

Thanks

David

Hi again!

I'm not very clued up on Restaurants in St Helier especially one's within walking distance of the Pomme. However ,I would suggest the Sirocco at the Royal Yacht . Its had some great reviews on here and is literally across the road from your Hotel . Its at the high end of expensive ... but Hey , your not 80 every day !!

Have a look at the Royal Yacht web site .

La Capanina in St Helier also comes highly reccommended if you want something 'formal' for the celebratory meal.

Thanks Again

The wife and I like the sound of the tasting menu with the wines at The Sirocco as I know would my brother in-law and his wife however, the older generation wouldn't like it and would resent the cost no matter how good the food was.

Therefore, we may have to look at La Capinnina, as the in laws would like the formality, however, if I can just hide the price :)

Regards

David

My mum and I went to Jersey for a week last year and stayed in St Helier.

Mum loved going to Liberation Square, so most days we'd spend about half an hour, sitting and watching the passing whilst enjoying an ice cream from the booth next to the Tourist Office. Of course that depends on good weather, and we were lucky it was quite warm whilst we were there.

I know some people think it's tacky, but as first timers, we enjoyed going on the little white train along the coast to St Aubin.

We also visited La Mare Wine Estate, which was very interesting and can definetely recommend the wine!

We booked onto a walk with a local guide which I think is organised by the Tourist Office in St Helier. The one we went on was about life on the island during the occupation. There wasn't a great deal of walking - lasts about an hour and a half to two, a lot of the time is spent standing though.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Durrell park/zoo.

I didn't hire a car - we used public transport and found it to be very convenient.

As for places to eat, we thought that the Roseville Bistro was great for seafood and good service. If you're after something v special, have you thought about trying the restaurant at the Club Hotel - Bohemia?

We booked a hotel on a B&B basis - Jersey and St Helier in particular, seem well blessed for good places to eat.

Have a lovely time.

Thanks Diane

Sorry it has taken this long to respond but have had troubles with my PC.

People watching in Liberation square if we were to start that the Mother in law and wife wouldn't want to do much else, if there is a nice bar to sit in then I would be happy too.

One of the main reasons to visit Jersey is take my father in law to the various occupation sites so the tour seems ideal.

Regards

David

In that case I would recommend people watching from outside the Cock & Bottle on Royal Square, or maybe Zepher at the Royal Yacht Hotel.
