I am moving to Bristol soon, and don't know anyone who lives there to advise me. If anyone can help me with the areas that are nice to live in, and those to avoid I would be very grateful.

Not always thought of as helpful, but estate agents should be useful here. I do know enough to say avoid St Pauls.

Lots of nice areas - with high rental prices! Clifton, Redland, Westbury, Southville, Bishopston: all very nice and $$$$$. Places I don't care for too much include Easton, St George, Fishponds, Kingswood, Hartcliffe, Knowle West, Horfield, well...quite a few more! I suppose it all depends on where you will be working & whether or not you wish to walk or rely on buses, & of course, your budget!

If you can advise which area you will be studying/working in then we can advise more. Bristol is a big city with lots of rush hour problems,

Ask 100 people and you will get 100 different answers! Nothing wrong with Fishponds, Horfield or Kingswood IMHO!!

Depends on age & how much you want to spend, are you going to be studying or working - do you want to be near night life or a more student kind of environment? Estate agents may well be your best bet they can also advise on local amenities - shops, gyms etc.

It really does depend with what you are going to be doing and what sort of things you want around you.

St pauls and Knowle are notrious places that aren't the best areas.

Horfield has good night life.

Clifton, very expensive but very nice.

There are areas outside the main city such as Bradley stoke, emersons green which are all new builds but have decent links into the city centre.

Dont think anyone can really help without knowing where you are working or studying and your transport issues.

A previous post advises that Knowle is bad, Knowle west is a large council estate but knowle itself on the main wells road is fine.

Public transport in bristol is very expensive and not great so very important you are within easy reach of where you want to be

Just to clarify for you Gunnar, as the OP clearly isn't coming back/interested.

Lived in 4 houses in Horfield over the years, & whilst it would not come under the roughneck bracket with K.West & Hartcliffe, I never said it did. I said 'places I don't care for' - each with various reasons which are not neccessarily because I think they are rough as ar$eholes.

Have you been to Horfield recently.

There is definately a good side and bad side as there is in Hartcliffe and Knowle.
