I read in the 2008 Montreal and Quebec City guide that the GST tax refund for visitors was still in place. Not so.. It ended March 2007-- which was killer news for us since we planned on it. Taxes are horrendous for visitors.

I know. I still wish I knew why they did it. We still go several times a year with it or without it, but the days of $1.00 US to $1.50 Canadian, plus the refund, are definately over. That said, next to Europe, Canada is a bargain and still worth visiting for so very much.

"Taxes are horrendous for visitors."

They're not THAT bad... they've been reduced to 13% (from 15% a few years ago).

And don't forget that Alberta (home of Banff National Park and Jasper National Park, for starters) has no sales tax, so visit us! All you pay is 5% GST, plus a local hotel tax of 0%-5% on your accommodations only.
