I find these comparisons almost offensive. It's like saying Boston is the London of North America. It doesn't make any sense.

I say don't take offense if none is intended, and let people make comparisons with things they know (or think they know). If for someone, a French-speaking city with older architecture and pretty sidewalk cafés and good restaurants reminds them of Paris, why not?

I very much enjoy showing my beautiful city off to visitors, and I am often amused that people from Europe perceive it as very American, and people from elsewhere often say how "european" it is.

Quotes I have heard from my fellow Americans:

"Why go to Ottawa, it's just trees isn't it?"

"I heard there is a Six Flags in Montreal. Anything else interesting?"

"The food in Montreal is terrible, why go there."

Sorry Platipus, I guess I would have to agree with Tristou.

NH-Couple, I got a giggle out of your quotes, I'm hoping those statements were made by those who have never been to either City.

Nothing to eat in Montreal? Too funny!

Yes very good quotes and I also agree with Tristou. Concerning the food I find it funny because when I was working in Toronto, I asked a local for restaurant suggestions and when I told him I was from Montreal his reply was "I'm very sorry to tell you that you will not find anything which can compare to Montreal cuisine here."

I should have said "mildly annoyed". My apologies to everyone up in arms that have pilloried me.

I forgot that the article came from the NY Post.
