Montreal hotel workers strike: status? |
|
We were in Montreal last weekend (July 6-7) to see the James Taylor concert at the Bell Centre, and got surprised by the Montreal hotel workers union strike. 1,500 hotel union workers walked off the job late last week, hotels affected were the Hyatt Regency, Hilton Bonaventure, Sheraton Centre, Delta and the Queen Elizabeth, though apparently most (if not all) returned to the job on Monday morning 7/7. I am unable to find any more recent update information on the strike's status, but the news reports warned that the union was considering impromptu strike tactics that would be less predictable, in order to disrupt hotel managements and their ability to service customers and maintain proper operations. canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html… Nevertheless, if this sort of thing is going to take place much of the summer, TA travelers to Montreal should be forewarned, at minimum. We found the Sheraton to function reasonably well, though there was no valet to greet us on arrival and take our car, I spent 10 minutes simply trying to find an employee to assist us with check-in. If anyone has more recent info, please post! |

Thanks for the tip!! We are staying at the Delta in two weeks, so we'll hope for the best. If it comes to it, we don't mind making our own bed, and can certainly live for two days without the room being cleaned...

There haven't been any news reports at all that I can find since last weekend's strikes. It appears it was something of a "warning shot" by the union, and having made their point, they are laying low for now. Still, the news reports from last week quote union officials as saying that any future strike-oriented tactics will be sudden and unpredictable, in order to prevent hotel management from being able to take steps to prevent disruption of services. Travelers to Montreal would do well this summer to be prepared for possible disruptions.

My sister works at the Sheraton Center Downtown Montreal. She told me that the Unions representing of all the hotels you mentioned came to an agreement with the employer except for the Hotel Reine Elizabeth-which is still on strike I beleive.

I've been at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth since Friday the 18th. Workers walked out on the 19th, supposedly returned the next day. I say supposedly because we did not get our room cleaned until that evening after multiple calls. Everything is back to normal now though. Today's Gazette reports that only the Hyatt is still on strike. Management here at the Fairmont did a great job actually in keeping things going.

We are staying at the Hyatt in 10 days. How do you go about finding out if they are still on strike?

You could check our daily newspaper: www.canada.com/montrealgazette/index.html just type - hotel strike - in the search

Thank you so much, MomOfTravelers, for the link. I will check it every day as I do not want to get stuck in a hotel without housekeeping, services, etc.

I think the Delta is still on strike. It's on my way home from work and I always see employees protesting (peacefully) on the front lawn. No idea if it is a full strike though.

Thanks for the update. I have been using the link to the Montreal Gazette to check on the strike, but they are not reporting any new news. I just got an email from the Hyatt informing me that their workers and many others are still on strike and that it is affecting their housekeeping and other services. I had made a new reservation at the Fairmont, but that is one of the hotels the Hyatt mentioned on their email as also having sriking workers. We want to stay at a hotel where they are NO STRIKING WORKERS. Does anyone know which ones these are? Thanks for any help on this matter.
