Clean/Budget Hotel in Toronto |
|
I am visiting 10/17-10/20. We are looking for a reasonable priced hotel. Clean is my main concern and location. Do you recommend downtown or by the airport? Also, it will be our first time. What do you recommend on sites? I want to go to Niagara Falls, CN Tower, Little Italy, Scarborough, etc. Will we need a car? Can you recommend any nightspots? |

Several things here. How many of you are there, more than two? What constitutes reasonable? There are number of "suites" style hotels in our downtown that are reasonable. DON'T stay by the airport, you'll hate yourself, you'll be forced to drive our Highway 401, which is a whole lot worse than the Santa Monica Freeway, and it will take you ages to get to and from the hotel. Niagara Falls is about 2 hours from here, but well worth the drive. CN Tower is always popular. Little Italy is just really a collection of streets that aren't nearly as nifty as they used to be. Scarobourough is a commuter community for Toronto, and unless you have family out there, it's really not worth the trip, it's just a suburg. You will want to have your car to drive out to Niagara, but within the city proper, it really isn't needed. I'll let someone who goes to 'em recommend the nighttspots.

I am just going to second what Flyinmom said about spots to visit. She's right; unless you have family in Scarborough, there is no "touristy" reason to go out there, it's just residences and big box stores and strip malls. And both the St. Lawrence Market and Distillery District areas are much more interesting than Little Italy.

The best option in Toronto (unless your with a large group) is a bed and breakfast. I regularly read the hotel reviews on this site and for what the big chain hotels charge, they're not very good on giving value for that price. With a bed and breakfast, you can often get a room in a wonderful old Victorian Home, breakfast included, so you don't have to go looking for a decent place, and often a unique sense of style as opposed to a bland, generic room.

Thank you all for the quick response. It will only be two of us visiting. Based on your suggestions, we will not rent a car. LOL..I deal with enough daily track in the Bay Area and LA. I will tell my daughter to pass on Scarborough! We are looking at the following hotels: Delta Chelsea, Sheraton Centre and The Alexandra. It is nice to be close to restaurants and public transportation. We hear the best comments on Canadian transportation and have no problem catching the subway. I looked up the via rail Canada for Niagara Falls vs tour bus. Any suggestions?

Alexandra? Don't do it. Yes, it's close to Queen West, but it's also close to a housing project and really not in the same league as the Delta Chelsea and the Sheraton. Really a last-resort type place.
