We had a marvellous trip to Newfoundland from Sep 5 to Sep 21, 2008. I will give a summary of our itinerary, in case this is helpful to other people making plans for next year. We would recommend all these accommodations and restaurants – our thanks to all the people who have posted reviews, advice and suggestions for things to see in Newfoundland, which made planning our trip so much easier.

Day 1, Sep 5: We arrived at St John’s airport at 9:15 am, picked up our rental car and drove to Grand Falls, to stay with friends for two nights. Lunch in Clarenville (Clarenville Inn).

Day 2, Sep 6: with friends in Grand Falls

Day 3, Sep 7: drove to Port au Choix and stayed at Jeannie’s Sunrise B and B. Lunch in Rocky Harbour (Fisherman’s Landing) and dinner in Port au Choix (Anchor Café)

Day 4, Sep 8: Drove to L’Anse aux Meadows and stayed at the Viking Nest B and B in Hay Cove, near L’Anse aux Meadows for two nights. Lunch in St. Anthony (Lighthouse Café) and dinner at the Viking Nest B and B.

Day 5, Sep 9: At L’Anse aux Meadows. Lunch in Gunners Cove (Northern Delight Restaurant) and dinner in L’Anse aux Meadows (Norseman Restaurant).

Day 6, Sep 10: Drove to Rocky Harbour and stayed at the Evergreen B and B for two nights. Lunch in Port au Choix (Anchor Café) and dinner in Rocky Harbour (Fisherman’s Landing)

Day 7, Sep 11: At Gros Morne. Lunch was take-out sandwiches from the Treasure Box in Rocky Harbour, dinner in Rocky Harbour (Ocean View Motel restaurant)

Day 8, Sep 12: Drove to Steady Brook and stayed at the Edgewater Inn B and B. Lunch in Wiltondale and dinner in Steady Brook (Madison’s at Marble Inn).

Day 9, Sep 13: drove to Twillingate and stayed two nights at the Captain’s Legacy B and B. Lunch in Badger and dinner in Twillingate (R and J Restaurant).

Day 10, Sep 14: Twillingate. Lunch and dinner in Twillingate (R and J Restaurant and Anchor Inn).

Day 11, Sep 15: Drove to Trinity and stayed two nights at the Artisan Inn B and B. Dinner in Trinity (Dock Marina).

Day 12, Sep 16: Lunch in Bonavista (Skippers Café) and dinner in Twillingate (Twine Loft)

Day 13, Sep 17: Drove to Dildo and stayed at Inn by the Bay B and B. Lunch in Clarenville and dinner at the Inn by the Bay

Day 14, Sep 18: Drove to St. John’s and stayed three nights at the Quality Hotel. Lunch in Ferryland (Colony Café) and dinner in St. John’s (Zacchary’s).

Day 15, Sep 19:In St. John’s. Lunch at The Rooms and dinner at The Hungry Fisherman.

Day 16, Sep 20: In St.John’s. Visiting with friends.

Day 17, Sep 21: Lunch at Velma’s. Departed from St. John’s airport.

We drove a total of 3550 km. The car rental (from National) included 200 km per day, i.e., 3400 km for our trip, so we were 150 km over ($37.50 extra charge). If we were to do the same trip again, we would fly into Deer Lake and out of St. John’s to reduce the driving time, even though there is an extra drop off charge for the rental car. Incidentally, Newfoundland and Labrador have an excellent provincial web site for calculating driving distances and times, which we found very useful in planning our itinerary. Another useful resource was the Traveller’s Guide published by Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism.

It would take too long to list all the fascinating things we saw and did during our trip to Newfoundland, but I will be happy to answer any questions.
