Taking a WW2 Navy veteran to Newfoundland |
|
My 87-year-old dad speaks fondly of the times he spent in Newfoundland during his WW2 navy service. He recently expressed a desire to see Newfoundland again so I thought I'd take him. Does anyone know if there is anything war-related that we could see (museum...old barracks?). I know that these sorts of things exist in Halifax (where he was actually stationed) but his fondness is more for Newfoundland. I've never been to Nfld before, so I have nothing to go on here. I have a feeling that perhaps the only thing that might bring back memories for him is the St. John's harbour. Any ideas out there?? Also, is there a reasonable hotel in St. John's that might have a view of the harbour? Many thanks for all suggestions. Dianne Ottawa, ON |

Bell Island (in Conception Bay not far from St. John's) was the site of attacks by German U-boats during WWII. I'm not sure if they have a museum although I have heard that it is possible to see parts of the sunken ships at low tide.

The Murray Premises Hotel is on the harbour and has room with harbour views.

dibaxter: what a lovely post to read. God bless your dad, & yourself as well for being such a good daughter & wanting to take him on a vacation. the other poster is right about Bell Island, and you can see some artifacts over there in their museums, as well as the Bell Island Mining museum as well. Myself, I don't know much about military sights to see here, but my suggestion is to contact the Royal Canadian Legion here in St. John's & hopefully they could give you some information. I'm sure there's sites to see here, unfortunately I'm not well versed on the topic. I wish you both a wonderful trip! - lingo

He'd likely be interested in "The Crow's Nest" which, I understand, has a lot of WW11 artifacts, etc. I know several people who've been there who've found it fascinating. You may want to check their website and/or contact them in advance.
