We are looking at Newfoundland for a motorcycle tour for 8-10 dys in early Sept. We usually just drive until we're tired and always find a place to stay but I'm a little concerned because of the sparcity of the population. Should we be looking a pre-booking eveything? It puts a damper on the `free spirit' idea but I'm too old to sleep in a ditch. Also, any idea of the usual weather for early Sept. I don't mind riding in the cold OR rain but not both.

Thanks

I don't think you necessarily need to pre-book everything, but NL does require some planning. You'll need a good map and a tourism guide, to make sure your day ends somewhere with an adequate choice of lodging. If you stop in Grand Falls, you'll be fine. If it's 8 p.m. and you're at Swift Current--not so good.

And although September is past the tourist season, the Targa road race will be happening then. It might be fun to see, but if you try to find a room in the town where all those racers are spending the night, it probably won't happen. (It's Sept. 13-20 but the route isn't posted yet)

Weather is usually good in Sept., but like everywhere else we've been having some erratic weather the last couple of years. "Good" for NL fall would be daily highs around 15-20C.

September probably has the most stable weather. West coast usually better than East coast. But be aware that if there is bad weather in September it can get quite cold (1 digit Celsius not unusual).
