Hi, we will be in Newfoundland the last week of August and the first week in September, can we expect to see whales or birds like puffins etc.

If so where would be the best place to see something.

Thanks

Hmmm... I'm not an expert, but I think by that time a lot of the seabirds (puffins, murres, gannets, kittiwakes) have done their thing and are starting to head out to sea for the winter. Best viewing of remaining puffins would be at Witless Bay Ecological Reserve or "Puffin Island" at Elliston. Murres also at Witless Bay. Gannets, murres & kittiwakes best viewed at St. Mary's Ecological Reserve near St. Bride's. St. Mary's is awesome. If you plan to visit St. Mary's I highly recommend a stay at The Cliffhouse Bed and Breakfast in Branch -- not far at all from St. Mary's. (www.thecliffhouse.ca) I wouldn't count on too many whales at that time of year, but Witless Bay is a good spot for whales.

Enjoy -- it's a beautiful province! You might be able to some more detailed info re:birding opportunities from the Natural History Society of Newfoundland & Labrador. (www.cs.mun.ca/~nhs/index.html)
