We are planning a driving trip to the east coast in mid August.

We will only have about 10 days in Newfoundland.

Couple of questions for the experts.

How far in advance is it advisable to book the ferry?

With the limited time, is it better to arrive in Port aux Basques and leave from Argentia? This will be our first (and hopefully not our only) visit and our aim is to see the scenery, particularly the smaller villages as well as a few days in St.John's.

Many thanks.

IF you plan on the Argentia ferry book well in advance as you will need a room for the crossing ..

We were thinking of taking the Thursday ferry which leaves at 9 am or the Saturday one which leaves at 8:30 am. Would it still be necessary or advisable to book a room?

If you go from Sydney to Port aux Basque it will take approx. 6-7 hrs. Then you have a full day's (maybe 9-10 hrs?) drive to get to St. John's. The Argentia ferry is 14 hr so I would definitely recommend a berth if you leave from there.

There are plenty of smaller communities between the two coasts plus you will have the opportunity to see the beauty of the west coast and possibly add Gros Morne National Park to your itinerary.

I don't know how far in advance you need to book but you can check availability online. Summer is the busiest time of the year and cabins/berths from Argentia will probably sell out. Also, you are not allowed to stay in your vehicle during the crossing.

If you are planning a day crossing from to Port aux Basques you won't need a cabin, or even a berth unless you are a very bad sailor. There are "lounges", which are large rooms with seating for over 100, a cafeteria, and a bar. You can sit in any of these (you can't, as you were told, stay in your car). For Argentia, which is overnight, accommodation is a must. If your trip begins in mid-August,and ends near the end of the month, you definitely need to book. A lot of people will be travelling around/before Labour Day.

With 10 days, I do think arriving on the west coast and leaving from the east, will make the best use of your time.

Why does moving from West to East make the best use of time vs the other direction?

It sounds like we are planning the exact same trip - we also have about 10 days and want to see both coasts.

Today I called the Marine Atlantic ferries to book/confirm sailings. I was told that although early booking is essential if you want a birth they are in the process of adding a new ferry to their fleet - as such ALL sailing times will be changing (this was very disappointing because we were trying to arrange accomodation based on the best arrivals/departures). In addition, I was told that very often, the births are completely fully booked by tour companies before the schedule is open to the public. I was told to keep a watch on the website for the 2009 schedule but that they didn't think it would be posted until at least February. Unfortunately, a lot of accomodation will be booked by then so I'm thinking we're going to have to take our chances.

I'd be interested in hearing about your itinerary.

Michelle

This is interesting information as I'm also planning a trip to St. John's (no plans to drive across the province - 'home' is St. John's) next summer and have been wondering about the ferry.

We will go to Argentia though, which is 17hrs in length according to the website, so we will be getting a cabin. I know we need to book early, but didn't think it would need to be done in January/February. Hopefully, hubby and I can get the vacation time for the dates I book the ferry for.
