Hi there, I will be in Port Aus Basques in mid september and will be staying for 3 nights at the st christopher hotel. Any ideas other than what I've seen on the gateway to newfoundland website? Any off the beaten track tips? Would love to hear from you. I will be spending the rest of my 3 week vacation touring Nova Scotia. Would love to have spent the whole time in Newfoundland but have family in NS. I also heard my Grandmother Hawco came from Newfoundland. Anything?

Do you have to stay in Port Aus Basques? If not Gros Morne is 4 hours up the west coast. We haven't been there yet, but looks spectacular, and is a major destination for NFLD. Look at www.grosmorne.com

I don't know if your trip allows for it, but we can just came back from the northern peninsula of Newfoundland. We thought that the Western Brook Pond Boat tour at Gros Morne and our two nights stay at Quirpon Island Lighthouse Inn were easily the highlights of our trip.

The scenery at Western Brook Pond is spectacular. Quirpon Island is only worth it if you stay at least 2 nights. The Island is fabulous to hike, the staff is wonderful, the food is delicious, the other guests were fun and interesting. We saw a lot of whales and dolphins, but I don't know if they are still around in September. I cannot say enough good things about our stay.
