Do you have to have a passport to come to Vancouver from the US? (well to get back into the US)

Check with your US customs office.

4everislander - you need one now to go south by land sea or air.

Hi;

As part of the budget that US President Bush signed on December 26, 2007, the law requiring the use of passports at LAND crossings to re-enter the US, will not be implemented until JUNE 2009 at the earliest. (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative)

travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

Currently, you need photo ID (i.e. driver’s license) AND your birth certificate for Customs on both sides of the border, OR a passport.

If you are FLYING into or out of the US, you must have a passport.

For more details, read the “Crossing the Border” Traveler Article here on TA.

thanks for the info.

So as a Canadian, I can drive into The U.S., hop on a plane and fly within the U.S. without a passport, for now?

Yes, until next June (2009) nine months from now. Just get a passport. It makes getting through customs and the border faster. If you wait, once it's required you'll be standing in line at the passport office all day with all the others that waited until the last possible moment like when it was required for flights. Beat the rush!

mylast passport expired after 5 years.

I heard a rumour that a Canadian passport may soon be good for ten years. Any truth to it?

Don't hold your breath! We've heard that rumor for years.. US one's are good for 10 years.. Canadian ones are really only good for 4.5 years as some countries require you have a passport that's valid for 6 months past date of entry to the country which means say if your passport expires in March but you are going to Peru in November you could be stopped and denied entry. Don't know how often it happens but I sure wouldn't take the chance.
