Whistler to Kamloops/Hope/Vancouver |
|
Hi, we're renting an RV camper in a couple of weeks and are planning to drive in a loop from Vancouver to Whistler, Whistler to kamloops then Kamloops to Hope and back to Vancouver in 6 days. Can anyone recommend any places to visit on this route? I understand Kamloops is not very interesting, is there any lakes/campsites/national parks nearby that are worth a visit? Cheers, Conchita |

Lots and lots of parks. A couple of good websites to start your research are http://www3.hellobc.com/campingrv/ env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/explore.html I would suggest that rather than driving down highway 5 to Hope, you go down the Okanagan Valley - much prettier and more to see and do. Vernon, Kelowna, Penticton, Osoyous. Might be a bit much to go all the way down to Osoyous and back along Highway 3 through Manning Park in 6 days, but you could cut back over to Highway 5 from Kelowna, which only takes about three hours to get to Vancouver from there. Osoyous to Vancouver is about 5 hrs.

Agree with Vancouverite - the Okanagan is a lot nicer than taking Hwy 5 from Kamloops to Hope. See www.drivebc.com for a distance calculator. One possible suggestion would be drive from Whistler to Lillooet to Lytton to Merritt then south to Princeton and then back to Vancouver over the Hope/Princeton Highway through Manning Park. Not so far afield, but a pretty drive. …gov.bc.ca/bcparks/…

Many thanks for the tips!

As Islandwest suggests, head to Lillooet, but you may want to consider taking #99 from there to Cache Creek, then south to Spences Bridge, then east to Merritt. I only suggest that because the highway from Lillooet to Lytton has a very nerve-racking stretch, at least for some people. A sheer dropoff on one side and a sheer cliff up the other side, all on a very unstable mountainside. But if that's what you like, then try it. Otherwise, the other route up towards Cache Creek is also very scenic. From Merritt, take highway 5a through Aspen Grove and down to Princeton. Generally a very quiet road with a number provincial campsites along it.

Hi All, Just got back from our trip to grey skies in London, oh how I miss those blue skies and sunshine! We did the loop from Whistler, through lilloet to Winfield (outside Kelowna) and back through Merrit, down to Hope with a night spent in a BC park outside Maple Ridge, it was fantastic, thanks for taking the time to give us the tips! It is not so often that we can offer blues skies and sunshine (at least on the coastal part of your trip)! Glad to hear from someone that they did the loop through Lillooet and enjoyed it. I often recommend it because I like that drive so much, but it's not for everyone.
