My wife and sister in law are staying at the Mezzinine now.

They say the place is delightful

Apparently the hotel owners have managed to keep the corrupt officials at bay...for the time being

Read these articles on the dispute. It reads like a "B" rated Italian cowboy movie

I was doing an internet news search for "Tulum" and ran into a couple of articles on the place.

And just this month (July 2008) this development

Just a fairly uninformed view but I hope they get out before the next wave of "officials" decides to come in...would not be a good choice to book now as on any day they can come in and take over...too much money to spend to be watching your back...clearly it is in the path of the land they want and from past experience in Mexico this is the pattern...initial confrontations,,,next one not so friendly and eventually they get the land.

AyJ Beach Club and AyJ Hotel are both located in an area that is away from the National Park of Tulum Ruins - all is fine.

Take a look at the maps on todotulum.com and sac-be.com to get an idea of where everything is located.

Has anyone thought about sending email petitions to both local and Central government officials to state their displeasure over the situation. If enought people send them I am sure that they might take notice of public opinion

Just an Idea !!!...

Maybe someone could make up a draft form for everyone to use?

What exactly is the situation with the hotels closed because of their location in the Tulum National Park?

1. There is an article on a local Mexican paper listing the hotels which the local/ national (?) government is shutting down.

2. There is anecdotal evidence that armed government troops drove tourists out of the eco hotel Mezzanine.

3. A report emerges that Mezzanine is back in business with nary a word or warning to present or future guests. Was the hotel shut down? Are they still taking bookings and re opening in hopes that something can be worked out?

4. What about the story a few months back that heavily armed "mexican mafia" shut down another Tulum resort frequented by celebreties & movie stars? Can't remember the name of the resort.

I wonder if any of this information is reliable, other than the initial article in the newspaper? That's the problem of believing what you read on the Internet.

I think Mimac is exactly correct...none of this is adding up at all...one day armed takeover next day business as usual...I do think something is happening but who knows the truth?

Marketing Ivera??? Would this be La Vita e Bella? It sounds like it is all of the land between the corner where the police post is and the ruins. Am I correct?

Every beach establishment north of the coba road has giant "closed" stickers on them. some appear to be actually closed. others, like mezzanine, appear to be operating normally, in spite of the 4 ft by 8 foot (not joking) sticker on the front and smaller stickers on every surface. very strange. apparently because of their location on the national park land that includes the tulum ruins. question...after 10 or more years of operation, the govt has only now decided they are illegal? smells funny.
