That Downtown Tulum would be the end of the Tulum I know and love. They have sold many lots , I guess its a done dal. But it not the area where Mezzanine & the other closed hotels are. In fact it doesn't have beachfront according to the map.

Greetings all -

We were down in Tulum - staying at Mezzanine - when it all started. We noticed a lot of gov't officials (from Profepa) there during our furst two days and then when we came back on Monday there were huge closure signs. The owner did a nice job explaining the situation and we were able to stay that night, but it looks like things took a turn for the worse. I hope it all gets worked out - Mezzanine was a great place to stay.

Cheers - Tim

Hi Tulum lovers,

I've just posted a blog about this issue with links to many local news reports. Looks like it's just the beginning of the battle....

Mods, this is my personal blog, not selling anything, this is not a ploy to make any money, just sharing information, thanks.

I'd have to study the downtown tulum map again, but I believe there's supposed to be a beachfront golf course in the plan. I could be wrong, but I think that's what I saw at one point.

Going to checkout the blog above...

What is confusing about the downtown tulum map is that it shows nothing but an ecological park from the ruins south to where the Coba Rd meets the Boca Paila Rd (the beach rd).

And then it shows a golf course (or something similar in the green space) in the area where Tribal Village, Playa Papaya, Copal etc are currently located.

Is anybody else reading this map the same way? There are no land marks listed and no scale.

This is horrible! Huge development like that will ruin the allure of Tulum.

I agree with you about the map pepper, it does appear that the "Golf, Spa & Residential Resort" is in the area of Copal and others. Perhaps they sold out. That would be very unfortunate.

I just hope that my favorite places will be in no danger in the future.

I posted some additional news before seeing this thread. All I can say is if I were at one of these properties I would leave now...they are not nice when they come in for the final takeover.

I don't know...I doubt any of these hotels would really want to sell out...ultimately, they may not have a choice. I cannot imagine the headaches invlolved in running a hotel down there. It seems so unfair.

The hotels that were closed are all located on private property that is also within a national park that was established in 1981. This land has been part of a big debate for years, and the government finally stepped in by closing these hotels down.

The park is located between the ruins and Eurostars Blue (inclusive).
