Hi y'all,

when I first visited the Yaxche website I decided we just WOULD HAVE TO go there as everything looks and sounds so amazing.

However, after reading reports I am thinking of avoiding it as most people have posted negative reviews.

Has anyone tried it and liked it? If not, what would you recommend as a MAYAN restaurant? Are there any others amongst mexican restaurants?

Please advise.

Many thanks

Brigette

Most people have posted negative reviews of Yaxche?

If that's the case, I guess I've been missing them. My impression is that (notwithstanding your vies, Lungfruit!), most people have pretty positive comments re Yaxche. That would inclue me. I would not say anyone just HAS to go there, but we regularly recommend it and regularly get quite positive comments from our guests regarding them.

FWIW!

Steve

The food is wonderful, but is surpassed by the beauty of it's surroundings. The Mayan cuisine, different than Mexican cuisine, is actually more of a vegetarian diet, and Yaxche does include fish and meat in most of it's dishes. There are a number of local restaurants that are less expensive, but for ambience and a gourmet experience you can not go wrong.

Hi Brigette

I second Playa Maya in recommending Yaxche, I hear very positive comments all the time and for a Maya restaurant this is by far your best choice in Playa, I have not read all the negative reviews but I can tell you the place is always full and people seem to enjoy it and go back.

The atmospheare is beautifull and relaxed and the tinkch chicken is mouth watering delicious!

Hope you enjoy it!

We have eaten at Yaxche twice the most recently being last April. Both times I thought it was wonderful. I would recommend the restaurant. You have to be a little adventurous as the dishes are not anything you have heard of. The waiter will make recommendations and describe the dishes in detail for you, however.

If you sit on the patio, the wandering singers come by and will play for a tip. It can be very romantic.

I think perhaps the most common complaint I hear about Yaxche (and again I don't hear many!) is that it's not really authentic Mayan/Yucatecan cuisine, that it's dressed up in various ways for the foreign contingent. And this may well be true -- I'm not enough of an expert on Mayan/Yucatecan cuisine to know, you know. But then I imagine just about nobody who comes to Playa to visit really is, right?

People often recommend a place like El Faisan y Venado, on the east (beach) side of the highway right near Juarez Ave, as a more authentic alternative, but again, I wouldn't know (though I like the venison!) and you also clearly take a step or two down the scale by going there, both in terms of ambience and also accessibility to visitors getting around on foot.

Another complaint I sometimes hear is that it's overpriced or the service can be slow, but then those are complaints you hear from time to time about just about any restaurant in Playa. :-)

I've certainly eaten there and liked it, a number of times.

Hi, Claudia!!!

We've suggested Yaxche to our guests numerous times. I'd say 99% of the time we get positive feedback. A few guests have found some of the menu items to be a bit on the bland side, but that may be because we're used to eating richly seasoned Mexican. If I recall, Yaxche does put icons of little peppers to inform guests of the picante content of a meal. No peppers may lead you to believe the meal was "bland." If you use discretion when ordering you should find you enjoy an excellent meal.

In my opinion, Yaxche's a leader of the pack when it comes to ambiance and at this time we're suggesting it as a great spot for a special dinner or occasion.

We had a great time at a reasonable price. Walked up without reservations mid-week, no problem being seated in the garden. We tried new dishes and several margs. After dinner, I ordered a Flaming Mayan drink. Quite the spectacle and tons of fun. Wish I had the pictures.

We also enjoyed El Faison y Venando out on the highway at Juarez. You can read about them both here.

Yaxche is one of my favorite places to eat in Playa. Yes it's more expensive than some of the other places, but it's NOT an expensive restaurant compared to restaurants in the US. It's lovely, good service, nice atmosphere and the food is great. You should definitely plan to try it!

Hmmmmm!

We were looking forward to eating at Yaxche during our upcoming trip too.

It's confusing because the reviews on TA certainly don't match the comments posted here.

Any other recommendations for a nice romantic dinner?
