I am going to Playa next week and I am planning on taking $150 for tipping. I will be there 6 nights is that enough money?

Also last time I stayed at an all inclusive when I have tried to tip the maid I leave the money on the nightstand and they never take it. Do you leave a note? Where do you leave your tip money?

Thanks!

Did you say tippling or tipping? T'aint enough for tippling but over $20 per day should do ok for the tipping. If you feel guilty....give more...and the Catholic church in PDC would appreciate help also.

Well, I am no expert but I usually find an envelope in my room just for the purpose described. You can leave a note but your maid may not be bi-lingual (know English). Leaving money helter-skelter in the room is not a good idea. It is tempting to the so inclined there on maintenance, security, supervision, guest services, room service, etc. I always give in person.

And as all know I always give wool socks as a tip. Warm feet are happy feet, and happy feet are a doorway to your soul (according to my mother).

I always left the tip on the unmade bed, this way she would have to get it in order to make the bed. Leaving it on the night stand, the maid could thing you emptied your pockets and laid it there before bed. I always left $2 a day $3/$4 if it was really messed up room.

I also left a tip in the frig for the beer/coke man, they are to diferent people. Leave a note if you want something. Like more more or water.

tipping at all inclusives seems to be a controversial subject on this forum. When I tip, it's just what I feel is appropriate for the service. Having said that, the other 2 comments on this post seem to be the norm....except for maybe the wool socks. LOL

We're going around Halloween this year and we're going to leave some candy as well!

We left $2 sometimes $3 dollars for the maid and we left it under the pillow of the bed before we left the room and it was always gone when we came back so we assumed she knew it was for her and picked it up.

We also left $1 to $2 for the mini fridge guy in the fridge and it was always gone to.

I thought the wool socks thing was funny too. I can understand the socks for warm happy feet in Minnesota, but these people live in the tropics...a pair of flip flops or a pedicure kit for year-round pretty feet would probably be more needed :o)

madison - we will be headed down to Puerto Morelos to Excellence Riviera Cancun in August and we plan to take about $100-$125 to cover tipping for 4 nights/5 days..so you should be fine!

We always bring @ $150 for tips for 7 nights. We tip $2-$3 a day for the maid, $1 per drink order for the bartenders, $1-$2 for the tram driver (this was at the Sandos Playacar so we used the tram services all week) and always left $5 for the waiters at the buffets or alacarte restaurants. I left the money for the maid on the night stand with a small piece of paper that said "Gracias!". That way the person who cleaned our room knew it was for the maid.

Enjoy your trip!

Viking - Does the Walmart in PDC carry wool socks??

:-)

Thanks for all the responses! LOL at the wool socks!

I will either put the money on the bed or with a sign this time. And thanks for the tip about the mini fridge I have never thought of that I always thought it was the maid that refilled it!!

I'm travelling to this area from the UK and we're not used to this tipping thing.

For example - do they get the hump if you don't tip them at the bar.

I thought the idea of all-inclusive meant you didnt need to carry cash around with you the whole time.

I'm not tight or anything, but would rather tip in one big amount at the end of the trip.

sadlersmead, some people prefer the tipping at the end of the week method. The usual argument against it is that the resort workers do have days off and if it falls on the day you're planning on tipping, your favorite server may miss out on the tip.

Your comment about tips being included is correct as most tour operators advertise their trips including food, beverages and tips. I or one, have never been able to get an answer as to how much of my trip cost is distributed to the resort workers. My guess is the answer is none.

As far as tipping the maid, do you tip in the morning or night or both because it may be a different person doing the room?

Also, if I want to tip the waiter at the beach that brings the drinks do I need to tip for each drink or would once in the morning do it?

Also, I know that the resort I stayed at in Jamaica was very strict on their "tipping the staff policy". Are they just as strict in Mexico? I don't want to get anyone in trouble. BTW, we are staying at the Royal Hideaway.
