I'm checking into booking an offshore trip with Ixtapa Sportfishing Charters but they might already be booked for end of Jan. Anyone have experience with someone I can check into as an alternative? Thanks!

Moose;

Here is the link to Dorado's list of C&R captians.

It's the ONLY list to go by for the area.

Just got back this am - do yourself a favor and call Ramon 'Monchito' Olea @ 52-755-554-4311 - I used him 3 times this past week during a 'slow' period and caught sailfish, bonita, and Mahi-Mahi. He has a 26' panga w/ 100 horse out board for $180. good for 2-3 people. We also taked him into recommending and coming out with us on a larger boat ' Aloha' with 4 additional people ($280) also used him for snorkel / I xtapa Island trip and caught another 20 Dorado Bull.

Its not the size of the boat but the experience with the captain. Beuna Suerta

Ramon is good, Capt on the Aloha is Cali, better on Sails, one of the very best.

branttravels -- I seriously doubt you caught 20 Bull Dorado, Maybe 1 Bull Dorado at ~20 pounds.

Stay as far from Ixtapa Sportfishing Charters as you can!! -- Write me a personal note.

Ah, all good notes. The more I thought about it, I think I prefere larger than panga, just to have a restroom on board. I spend too much time in the gulf trying to figure out how to use the restroom on a boat with a bunch of guys around! This is VACATION this time! I also expect a little beer drinking. Our party may have grown 2 more so need something for up to 4.

So, I'm looking for a small cruiser as a result. I'm noticing some of the small companies have multiple boats which seemed to be intertwined between companies. Give me some scoop on some small cruisers that speak English well.

Also, what are billfishing tags?! The site I was sent to said bring them! Where do I find such a thing?

I understand also that offshore will find the billfishing, marlin, etc. If we do some inshore fishing, are there any captains that will allow us to keep some fish so we can have some cooked?

Hi Moose, check the list, several good small cruisers. Couple top ones Nautilius with Martin, Aloha with Cali, Marlin Azul with Javier. Probably can get a slot on the first two as they came on scene recently. Nautilius has been there but Toro had it. Martin had the panga Isamar.

Offshore there are slao Dorado(Mahi-mahi) and tuna, keep all you want. Inshore several spcies for table fare.

Billfish tags: Contact - The Billfish Foundation, Peter Chaibongsai, at 1-800-438-8247 or 954-938-0150 ext. #107, fax 954-938-5311, item # 35-445-704-00, $39.95. 10 tags & cards, dart, instructions, use what you need, leave the rest with the crew. Everybody always needs more tags!!

o.k. Straighten me out - again! I'm getting differnt stories on what is caught inshore vs. offshore between you all and the guides I've contacted.

Also, I assume panga's are mostly inshore?

I got the info on the sailfish tags - thanks again Dorado1. Now tell me, other than catch and release, what is the benefit to the fisherman to tag?

Moose;

Nope, on the Pangas! They will run WAY out (30+ miles) on Tuna trips, depending on who you book, and what you request.

Stick to Dorado's list! He's not getting a cut, or any kind of kickback.

Here's something that may clear things up, between In and Off shore. Decide on what you guys care to fish for FIRST, then we can go from there in the advise department.

Otherwise, I invision you spinning in a circle at a high rate of speed LOL!
