Review: Dissappointed with Nassau |
|
Went on my honeymoon and stayed at sunrise beach villa, paradise island. That was pretty good. Your money goes to the beauty of the water, location to Atlantis, and having your own kitchen. Nassau was a complete dissappoint. As a former colonial town it has not developed into well run tourism spot like Annapolis, Mystic, or Breckenridge. Think of it more like the rust belt factory or mill town with many abandoned store fronts and quite dirty and broken sidewalks. It has no charm. Most of Nassau reminded me of North St. Louis. Saddly I was told their downtown has improved quite a bit from 10 years ago. The town shuts down at 7 pm but a few bars/clubs remain open and depending on the night, it is not safe for tourists. The term the locals used is "Junglaese" I beleive. They frequently fist fight each other inside and outside of the bars. For affordable beer I stopped in a shop called the pawn bar near the paradise island bridge. Scarry place (though I saw worse places) and you pay $7 for 3 12oz bud lights in the can. If your staying on paradise island I wouldn't recommend leaving it too frequently, espicially afterdark. Only go to the bahamas if you are into scuba and are a heavy rum drinker.

Did you do any homework before you left? I am sorry but if you did and you thought you were going to find Annapolis or Mystic I am sure you were sorely disappointed.

I pay $6 for 1 beer in Santa Monica - 3 beers for $7 sounds like a deal to me!! I am off to Bahamas next June and am hoping I have a better experience!!

Flash, I think our beer procuring experiences may be an apples to oranges comparison. I've been to SoCal as well and for the quality establishment we're talking here the equivalent in SoCal $7 goes much further. I didn't mention $24 I spent on two rum and cokes at the dunes but in that case I felt like I got what I paid for. I am used to purchasing pitchers of beer. In Nassau, that was not an option.

Aw , you should have went with us ! we had a blast ! Yes the town closed down early , but being in a strange area who would want to stay out too late ? The locals we meet were very nice people ! I didn't find the area dirty, and as for the broken sidewalks well... maybe your expectations were just too high?

I'm going to say it again. If you don't do your homework and have complaints like these, you won't get any sympathy here. Every complaint you lodged has been addressed in these forums. You might not have noticed, but Nassau isn't in the states and the local taxes don't go to upgrading sidewalks and widening streets. Yes, the town shuts down at 7:00, but they don't run 2 shifts to keep retail open for you. I suggest you stay out of all the Caribbean Islands if you are looking for a town to compare to Annapolis or Mystic. Don't know anything about Breckenridge.

"stay out of the carribean". Sounds like a parent's "do it because I say so." Who beyond the age of 12 does this arugment work on. I criticise the charachter of the bahamans and this is the knee jerk, oops, loyalist response I get. I think my next trip to the caribean will be a question of my zeal to speak spanish vs the zeal the bahamans to clean up their own town. Those are my last words on this topic. Peace folks.

livesinMo, the Bahamas is not actually in the Caribbean, and that in itself probably has alot to do with your disappointment AND posters' negative reactions to it: tourists arrive with many assumptions about the Bahamas, and most of them are wrong. FWIW, I think that you have made several valid points about Nassau that other novice travellers will find useful in planning their own trips.

livesin MO. Read my post again. It's not a warning, but a statement that you aren't likely to find the pristine towns in the Bahamas or too many of the old cities in the Caribbean. I'm not a loyalist, but a realist and I, unlike some, don't feel Nassau and PI are the slice of cake with the most icing. As a rule, the people of the Bahamas are more highly educated and have more social skills than those of some of the islands south of the Bahamas. I've been to many of the islands and the British influence of first world country is still evident to me.

Well said shmirl. OK boys and girls, you can stop arguing now. Everyone has different expectations, and if they are not fulfilled then that is where we differ. No biggee!!
