how would you spend your time ( 7 hours ) on GCI? |
|
going on CC in late november. ive been to cozumel & rented a jeep & found a neat snorkling site at the money bar i think id like to do something kinda similar yaknow drive around find a neat place to lunch snorkle a reef drive around find another snorkle site buy some souveniers... all in seven hours |

Looks like GC has gotten through Gustav pretty good. If things are still good on the East End and Cayman Kai (Rum Point is there) that is where I would recommend you head to. If standing at Rum Point facing the ocean, head down the beach to the right. Beaches are public to the high water mark. However, I am saying that not knowing if Gustav did any damage to the reef, etc. There's a little restaurant, etc at Rum Point. However, our fav restaurant is Ocean's Edge on the North Side before you get to Cayman Kai. Look around web and GC websites for good dive/snorkel areas in addition to the area I spoke of. I'm sure you will also get good advice here from others.

its been several years since I've been to GC, but by far the coolest thing on that island is String Ray City. Forget the bars, shopping and snorkling, you can do that anywhere, but I know of no other place where you can swim and hold string rays. And no, its not dangerous, ITS THE NEATEST THING. I can't remember the distance to there from the cruise ships, but check and see, its a once in a life experience.

I agree with "lucky to dive". Both times we've been to Grand Cayman we did a Stingray tour of some sort. There are also several good snorkeling areas down by the cruise ship ports that you can walk to before getting back on ship.

A branch of Red Sail Sports is (or was) located at Rum Point. They have tours to StingRay City which is easy access from Rum Point. See map www.caymanactivityguide.com/DiveSites.htm Email Red Sail Sports at http://www.redsailcayman.com/gc_index.html The Hyatt leased Rum Point and built an activity area there, Red Sail Sports was there, etc. The Hyatt has left Grand Cayman and word has it that the family who owns the Rum Point land is now running things. That is why I'm not sure if Red Sail Sports is still there. We used RSS at RP for the Stingray tour and other activities in March 2007.

Yes, a trip to stingray City is not to be missed. You can book a snorkeling trip that includes Stingray City and the reef, some continue on to lunch at Rum Point. You will find a nice gift shop there for souveniers. Renting a car for the time you are there is not practical when you factor in the time it will take to get off and back onto the ship, picking up and delivering the car and figuring out where you will go and what you will see.Pedestrian and vehicle traffic in Georgetown can be very slow and congested when the ships are in and you wouldn't want to risk being late for the ship's departure!

will totally endorse kiddos advice! there is no experience you can replicate anywhere like Stingray Sandbar and doing the trip from Rum Point for a cruiser probably the best bet:) As of this past March Redsail still operated from Rum Point. Check with them to see if that remains so. If another operator is in play, they will tell you and offer info as to who, how to make contact/reserve, options for transport from cruise ship disembarkation point to Rum Point & return, etc.

What about other waverunner tours like Fat Fish or Ebanks?? I think both offers the personal service of picking up the client & taking to sting ray city - snorkling else where & wetlands//// & lunch
|
I sent a recent inquiry to Fat Fish this is there offering: Our tours can be done by jet ski, jet boat or our 24 ft. center console. Each jet ski can hold 2 adults and 1 child. The jet boat can only hold 3 passengers at one time- there is a 500 lb maximum. The jet boat comes with a driver/guide. The 24 ft. boat can hold 4 to 6 people. It would be up to you which vessel you would be most comfortable with. We have had young children on the jet skis and the jet boats before, the 24 ft. boat does offer a little security however, if you are not too experienced on the water. The jet boat and 24 ft. boat are $100 US per hour. The cost of the jet skis are as follows; 1 rider on 1 ski is $125 US and 2 riders on 1 ski is $175 US. These prices are for the 2 1/2 hour tour and include transportation to and from your hotel. The stingray City Tour takes 2 1/2 hours to complete. The Stingray City Tour includes a visit to Stingray City- where you can feed and pet the stingrays, a snorkeling stop along the reef- at a less traveled area- very beautiful, a tour through the mangroves (Cayman's natural wetlands) and a stop at Kaibo, a beach bar/restaurant on the other side of the island. Does anyone know Kaibo rest.?
|
My guess is that you are referring to the Kaibo restaurant at http://www.kaibo.ky/ (it's down the road from Rum Point. If you click on the map on the website - it's the area near #26 - the other beach bar is Rum Point). The restaurant used to be the Kaibo Yacht Club but is doesn't say anything about that on it's website (new Mgmgt maybe?) Last time I ate there was March 07 - the food was very good and it was a nice relaxed on the beach place. Lot of people hanging at the bar.
