How is Vieques in October? We have a flight booked for the week Oct 15-22 (can be changed.) I now read this is the offseason/rainy season. Have we made a mistake? Is it too humid and rainy to enjoy Vieques at this time, or might this be enjoyable off-season travel? Are most hotels and restaurants open? We also had planned a couple of days to El Yunque. Does October pose a problem? Any advise you can offer will be much appreciated!

Travel to Vieques in October can be great--fewer tourists, hence lower prices and more bargaining power. However, (and this is a big however this year) October is still hurricane season, and this year's hurricane season is expected to be the worst ever (with 20 or so hurricanes predicted.)

How adventurous are you? You basically have 3 options:

1. Change your dates until mid-November or later (prices have already started going up by then.)

2. Buy trip insurance and monitor weather activity

3. Go for it! Two years ago, my daughter and I were on Vieques during the "worst tropical storm in YEARS!" that lasted for five straight days. Even the big island experienced massive flooding.

Still, it was one of the best vacations of our lives. Of course we missed out on sunning on the beaches, but we had a wonderful time hanging out indoors with the locals and fellow travelers at restaurants, bars, the coffee shop, the laundromat and even locals' homes. There are a few small shops and museums and although you may have forgotten it, playing in the rain is an awful lot of fun.
