My wife and I will be spending two or three days in Old San Juan next month. Since our time is short and there's lots to do with in walking distance of the hotel, we hope to avoid renting a car. However, we would like to see El Yunque as well. Is there other transportation options from Old San Juan or is a rental car our best bet?

You could take a tour. but for that cost you can rent a car for the day, Hit other areas, Do some grocery shopping and pretty much dictate your own schedule.

I don't think there's a better way than renting a car. Tour buses charge about $40 per person to take you out there. You can rent a car for about $20+insurance and taxes=$40. Charlies car rentals are fairly economical.

a rental car is *so* easy, and the drive is only about 45 minutes from the airport. plus, you kind of need a car to drive around in El Yunque. i was surprised to find out that you basically drive into the forest, and around to all the stops. there's no park shuttle like in Zion.

have the car delivered to your hotel, if the rental place supports that. failing that, just cab or shuttle to the airport, rent a car and drive to El Yunque, and then return the car and cab or shuttle back to your hotel.

i think it will actually be less hassle than you think, and make the visit to El Yunque more enjoyable.

The Sheraton Old San Juan has an Avis desk. Check your auto insurance. You may be fully covered. I had AAA and it covered me. I have progressive now and the policy specifically states Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
