Hi,

Going to PR with my partner in a couple weeks, and we are staying at the Westin Rio Mar. I am trying to figure out if we should rent a car -- we are New Yorkers and environmentalists, and would rather not drive unless it's really necessary.

The main thing we want to do is visit the El Yunque national forest to hike, birdwatch, etc. Other than that, we probably won't leave the Westin property. (I know that food within the Rio Mar is horribly expensive and we'll have to plan for that.)

According to the hotel website it's 5 miles to El Yunque -- does that mean the visitors' center? Also, they say they rent bikes -- would there be any problem bicycling from the hotel to the forest visitors' center? [we would then park 'em -- I know bikes are not allowed on the nature trails within the forest] That seems to me like the most fun option, but it might not work if the highway is totally unsafe for cyclists, the hotel won't let you take bikes off the property, etc.

Thanks!

I would not think of doing it. The road is curvy, steep, narrow (one lane each way) and without sidewalks. Perhaps with a motorcycle, but not safe either...

I wouldn't try it - definitely a very curvy, narrow, CONGESTED road. Even walking along the road is discouraged, according to the guide we met in the park.

Good luck - it's beautiful and worth the effort to see it.

You may be able to rent for just a day???? Or get a driver.

If your health and fitness condition allows, go for it. You can rent a bike in Isla Verde (Hot Dog Cycling) for half or full day, days, or weeks. If you need more information, email me.

No way. Forget the bikes. Not only extremely steep and curvy, you can be killed and I'm not kidding. At times, the road barely fits 2 cars, one each way, there is no room for the bike to run on the side and a bicycle cannot not be detected before many curves. When and if you get to El Yunque, a bike could be stolen even if chained and it will cost you 20 times more than a taxi. I very much doubt anyone will rent you a bike to take to El Yunque either. Take a taxi, it's not that far.

Rent a car or get a cab, don't bike. most roads are way to narrow with no shoulder at all....and PR drivers are a little on the wild side and it is just a bad idea in my opinion.

Have a great trip,

Martha
