Hi there,
Ponce, unlike San Juan or any other big city in the world, does not change at a fast pace, so, in all honesty, there's not much that has changed in the last 5 years. There are, however, more places to hang out or get dinner at or near the downtown district, and there's a considerable number of new construction and renovation projects going on near the Plaza as I type this. Overall, Ponce is beginning to change for the better. The Airport is now back in action, and moving 200,000 passengers every year. 4 new hotels (including a Marriot and a Sheraton) are under construction, as well as a great Convention Center, but none of these things you'll see anytime soon.
New things that were built since you came to Ponce:
1. Costa Caribe- villas, restaurants and one of the best golf courses in the island, it is part of the Ponce Hilton. Inside Costa Caribe, you'll find Sancho's , a GREAT sushi bar--best in town (of course, there are only two!!)
2. Restaurants and places to hang out near the Plaza: 1) Café Paris, 2) Barcode, 3)Café Tomás (rest. and bar), 4) Rincón Argentino (rest and bar/lounge), 5)Casa de las Tías (rest and bar/lounge). Unfortunately, a great place that opened recently called Trova y Tapas closed down.
I hope that helps!
