....I'm traveling to P.R. with my husband and 15 year-old son next week. We've never been to Puerto Rico and are really looking forward to an exciting experience. We are South Americans living in Nueva York and honestly have the biggest craving for good Mofongo, Arroz con gandules, alcapurrias and all those great things that we get to eat here but would like to experience the REAL flavors from overthere....so, please any suggestions for lunch and dinner? Thanks!!!

Fridak63:

Happy the you're coming to the source. For alcapurrias and all the other famous fritters, try first Pinones, minutes east from Isla Verde. There you will find all kinds of food stands from wood, concrete, to straw. For some reason they are all good. These places make all types of PR foods so you will have plenty to choose from. In the same area there are satting down restaurants also with criollo menus and excellent sea food. Soleil, Waterfront, to name a couple. For fancier puertorrican food try El Jibarito in Old San Juan and La Casita Blanca in Barrio Obrero. La Casita was recently feautured on $40 a Day By the Food Network. In Isla Verde there is El Metropol which offers cuban and PR food and Mi Casita. All are reasonably priced. More alcapurrias, bacalaitos, tostones, piononos, and mofongo can be found at Los Kioskos in Luquillo. There are about 60 different kioskos along the marginal on Highway 3, right before you get to the famous Luquillo Beach. Luquillo is located about 45 minutes from San Juan heading east. Just drive or walk along the marginal rd. until you find the kiosko you like.

Puerto Rico has a large variety of different local, continental and international cuisines. Just ask and we will gladly give you more specific suggestions. Buen Provecho!
