I will be traveling to Puerto Rico on August 26th. We will be in town for 9 nights in Condado. I will be with my family which is 2 adults, 2 teenagers and 1 toddler. I've been searching for different tour companys to take us all over..Places like the Bio Bay, Rainforest, Culebra, Camuy Caves, and Arecibo Observatory. But what I am finding is that for the 5 of us, these trips are becoming expensive. We will be renting a car anyway to visit my husband's family. Can driving around to these sites be fairly easy or would putting up the money for a tour be recommended?

Dear Sprosado:

Sounds like you have plenty of time to travel around every major point of the island. My advice is to go with the car. With all the maps and guides available in PR you should not waste much time getting lost. PR has excellent signage although most are in Spanish. For the bio bay you have to pay for the individual tour on site, but if you arrive at the departure point in your own car is cheaper. Call ahead for the observatory and the Camuy caves because they open only on specific days. For Culebra you can take your car if space is available on one of the ferries. If not, rent one there. Enter Culebra on any of the major brousers for info on rates. Call in advance for schedules. Web sites for PR are many.

WWW.gotopuertorico.com is the most common. Also, most hotels, restaurants, tour operators and attractions have their own sites. Enjoy your trip!

In the main island your rent car would serve you well. Try to buy a map at any gas station or tourist store and you will save enough money to get dinner in a fancy restaurant. For Culebra or Vieques you can not take your rental car, and that trip can't be done in 1 day, you have to find a place to stay overnight. You leave the car at the dock and rent another one in Vieques or Culebra.

For the BioBay you have to take either a kayak tour or a large boat tour, that depends on the way you want to experience.

You really don't need a tour to visit El Yunque. There are two trails that get you to the same place, La Mina Falls. Bring towels and your bathing suits and.... water.

Have fun on your trip.

I would recommend renting a car. Driving in Puerto Rico is not so terrible. You may encounter aggressive drivers at times in the city but don’t be discouraged to drive out and about. I don’t think you can take your rental car in the ferry. Rental car agreement prohibits it. You can leave it in Fajardo by the pier and rent another one in Culebra or Vieques. Have a fun trip

Thank you everyone for all your information. We have decided to rent a car rather than take the tours. It will be much cheaper and in the long run i think we will have more fun just doing it ourselves.

Dear sprosado:

I noticed that one of the places that you did not mentioned on your list of places to visit was Old San Juan. Most travelers visit this worldwide known historical city.

You asked about touring alone or with tour professionals.

A guided walking tour with a specialized tourist guide is the best way to explore Old San Juan and experience the culture. Learn the answer to:

1. Why the buildings are painted the way they are and the story behind the unique cobblestone streets?

2. Which monuments were declared World Heritage Sites?

3. How to visit a colonial courtyard and which historical building they may enter.

Old San Juan's streets are narrow and limits a bus tour passenger's vision to the size and angle of the window. Traffic is heavy and the driver has to concentrate on driving; therefore, limit the information to memorized script and no time to answer your questions. The personalized service is lost.

Type the keywords in search engines like www.google.com: walking tour puerto rico in google and you will find tour guides or companies that offer the service.

In addition, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company have suggestions to tour Old San Juan on your own:

Wishing you fun!

Thank you so much for the info on Old San Juan. We had been planing on going there but we figured we would take the bus because it is so cheap. So once we take the bus there, can we then get a walking tour of Old San Juan or do we have to go through a tour guide first?

Dear sprosado:

Booking the tour ahead will guarantee a space at the date and time you wish to tour Old San Juan.

Taking the bus is a smart decision. Allow waiting time at the bus stop.

Type the keywords walking tour puerto rico in search engines such as google at www.google.com and you will find tour guides or companies that offer the service.

Wishing you fun
