Ochi to Bl Mountain? |
|
Anyone know the best way to get to the mountinas from Ochi? Tours, taxi, ? |
|
Tours or taxi can be arranged from your hotel or with a taxi on the street. Where in the Bl Mtns do you want to go?

Thank you for your reply Ohliz. I'd like to hike around up there for a day or two up and around on the peaks and such. So I don't think I want to hire a taxi or even a guide for that long. I wouldn't mind paying a taxi just to get me up there, though, either from Ochi or Buff Bay. I think there is a Blue Mountain tour that goes up and around, but I don't know if they run during the time I'll be visiting-July.......I know, it's the rainy season, yet it's my only time, and I don't care about the weather. Any other feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

Hello hiker07, I once spent a week in a private house that I rented. Then I hiked the Blue Mountain area and when I came back to earth it took me another week to get used to the noise and hustle of earth people again. I will never forget what a wonderful experience it was. Please contact the owners of this place called the Starlight Chalet They will know which road is open and maybe they will arange a taxi for you. tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g147318-d251… HAVE FUN!

Good advice from Johnny :) I would hire a taxi to get me up there AND stay with me if only because getting one back down may be difficult. Also if you plan to hike, you don't want to do that unescorted. Staying overnight is really ideal....Starlight offers hikes and such. There is a Blue Mountain bike ride that is a day trip bookable from most hotels or tour companies, you ride up to a spot, get on mountain bikes and ride downhill, and stop at a waterfall near the end, a meal or two may be included.

Johnny and Liz, I thank you for your help. I'm glad I came across this web site. Yes, the Starlight sounds good. I thought about staying at a few places, so maybe I'll start here and see how it goes. Thanks for the link. The guide is always a good idea as well. I have experience hiking places, but not here, so maybe I'll get one up at the Starlight or roundabouts. Paying for a taxi to wait may be difficult although sensible. I may want to stay longer than a few days(Time's on my side). But a running taxi meter would not be cool runnings. I'm open for adventure and hiking, so I may just wing it on the way down. I, and it looks like countless others, really appreciate your time and consideration with my plans. I'll continue to check for updates from time to time. Irie

I only suggest a driver that waits for you if you don't stay up there for the night. If you choose Starlight or Whitfield Hall or whatever, transport up and down can be arranged. In any event, no meters on taxis, it is not unusual for a driver to accompany you or wait for you for a relatively small additional fee. Hiking without a guide is not recommended not because you aren't a good hiker, it's because a guide will know what is private property that you should avoid and what is not, and also for safety....the B Mtns are REMOTE, hurting yourself up there alone would not be a good thing. It gets cold up there too.

Hello hiker07, Please open this link and enjoy reading about all the activities that are taking place.
|
P.S. Maybe you can both find a way to help each other. They need medical supplies that you can bring in and you will need a guide. Have fun!

Liz, :) Sorry about that. I was playing on words: meter "running"-cool "runnings"--Yes, I was aware that there are no metered taxis in Jamaica--but your comment is sound as I reckon there are many vistors who think "life works the same everywhere."
I was at Borders the other day and found a guide that mentioned Whitfield as a place to overnight--you had mentioned that as well. I will mark this on my itinerary. It looks like a good place to start and get a guide.
Although a season away, your advice is helping me focus on a plan.

Johnny, I checked out that first link you sent me about that lodge--there were mixed reviews about staying there, but I intend on keeping an index of places to check out in the event I find myself in the area. The Blue Mountain Project--that looked interesting. You mentioned bringing in medical supplies--that I can do. I am going to contact them and find out what else I can bring them. Again, thanks a bunch for the great advice!
