Negril vs PA vs Blue Mountains? |
|
We're coming for our first ever trip to Jamaica May 25-29 (4 nights only :) and we're trying to decide how to spend our time... We booked a reservation at the Rockhouse Hotel in Negril, and a flight in and out of Montego Bay, but since then we've read so many good things about Port Antonio area... Should we consider changing our plans and visiting PA only? Also we love mountains and Whitfield Hall in the Blue Mountains sounds wonderful... any recommendations? Thank you! Andrew Hoppin |

My vote goes for Porty, We have stayed all over the island and now we only vacation in Porty. For us Porty is less touristy and that's what we like. I feel the Portland area is the most beautiful of any spot on the island. What your going to find is that 4 days will not be enough... If its your first time though, anywhere will be a treat, but if your like us after our first time, all you think about is when the next time is going to be. Have a great time where ever you go. Here's a link to a currency converter, its nice to know what your spending as there currency is much different than ours. Find a cambio for the best rate, the airport has the worst rate. Have fun, there's lots to see!

Hi ahoppin, If you were staying longer and based on the fact that you love mountains etc Port Antonio would be the place to go. However, considering you are landing in Montego Bay in order to get to Portland your time will be spent travelling. Negril will give you a laid back experience and a horse riding experience/excursion some breath taking views. Next time book at least a week for Port Antonio.

It is a long long drive to Portland from Montego Bay, you can't trust the maps! It doesn't look far buy it takes a long time. I think you should go to Portland/Blue Mountains when you have more time so you can really enjoy it. Negril is really touristy and lot's of people from the US, I found it more fun in the leass touristy areas so i'm not a big fan of Negril. You may consider Falmouth which is rich in history, it hosts the largest bend down (flea) market on the island, and the beaches are beautiful. There are way less tourists and the prices are more affordable. It also has the Luminous lagoon which is threatened and exists in only two places in the world!

Thank you all for the great advice-- what a great forum! :) Ok so we'll leave Eastern Jamaica, sadly, for next time... Given that, any recommendations on where to stay on the night of the 24th (after landing at 7:20pm at Montego Bay)? We're thinking of going to Falmouth for the 25th (would love to drive up to Good Hope if possible) and staying at Time n' Place if they have availability-- would you recommend renting a car or hiring a driver for the 25th? Finally, we need to get to Rockhouse in Negril on the 26th, and again, we're wondering whether having a car there would be a good idea. Thanks again! Andrew

oooops sorry for misspelling Portland there, ;)

Though it's costly, you can charter a flight from Mo' Bay to PA. I was just quoted $1,250 round trip for two people but you can be in PA in an hour.
