Mayfield Falls - Can't swim..will that be a problem? |
|
I'm planning on visiting Mayfield Falls next week, but I can't swim...just wondering whether there are any deep parts you walk through that I'd find to be a problem? Also, what does "hike" really imply? Are you climbing, or just walking, etc.? |
|
Just walking in the river and stepping on rocks and stones that the guides have memorized the exact location of even when they can't see them. There are a couple of pools where people can swim if they choose. You need not worry at all. Very safe for non-swimmers.

What he said :) All quite shallow.

Thank you, I look forward to it!

Ok just caught this post and I might cause some controversy here. first and foremost Mayfield Falls is beautiful and too good to miss. secondly yes the water is reasonably shallow, but -- I am 5ft tall and the water was over my head in places and although I swim I still found it a bit intimidating - yes there are ways round this but they can be tricky to climb due to slippery rocks etc. Also at this time of year, with the rain, the water can be quite invigorating. my advice - go but make sure your guide knows that you can't swim in advance- not when you hit the first swimming pool! Of course if you are 6ft tall you should have no problems- JMHO

One April we went and the water level was low. We walked the entire time in the river with small kids and loved it. The next time we went in July. The water level was very high. We walked along the bank and jumped in at a few spots.
It was deep then, and running fast. Check with someone who has been recently and can tell you how high/rough it is.

We were just there last week and it was not deep at all. My 9 and 12 year old are good swimmmers, but I don't think we swam at all. We did jump in at our entry point, but I was able to touch. There were other ways to get in the water without jumping. The guides are fantastic and very accomodating. This was a surprise - we hadn't heard anything about it and tried it on a whim. We had the best time!!!! I am glad to see it get some press here on TA. It really should not be missed!

kayseeah You may do fine as a non-swimmer however you will enjoy it more with a few swim lessons. I did most of the Falls and snorkeled as a non-swimmer. This past summer I learned to swim. I was more comfortable in the water, even when swimming was not involved. Don't miss out on this excursion because you are unable to swim. If you have the time, take a few swim lessons. It took me 10 lessons to learn. On our vacation I went on a 90 minutes snorkeling tour through caves, jumped into cenotes and swam up to the swim-up bar. Heck, for the first time I got my hair and swim suit wet :-). Pauline

I agree w/ most on this, im a non-swimmer as well at first i was alittle leary, there's a narrow bridge which you have to walk over, sort of high and made of straw, wood & thick rope. So once i pass that part of it, i just had to deal w/ the water issue. And although im very afraid of the water, i really enjoyed Mayfield Falls. MY advice stay close to the guide (the tour person) walk near him , because of the slippery rocks he had to hold my hand to step from one rock to he next at certain areas. you'll enjoy it have fun
