Hi everyone,

I am 3.5 months pregnant and I am very interested in the dunns river falls excursion but I question its safety. Those that have been there, is it safe and worth going given my situation? If not, what excursions would you recommend?? BTW for those that have stayed in RIU ocho rios hows the food and entertainment at the hotel ( i plan on eating alot lol).

Thank you

Its been a few years since we've been there, but I don't believe they allow you to go if memory serves me correct. I think there's a warning sign for pregnant women.

the reasonable person in me says that unless the doctor has advised you against any strenuous activity (unlikely at this stage in a pregnancy unless you have high-risk issues), you should be okay... going up in a group makes it much easier as well so an organized tour would be no worries...

however the alarmist, overprotective side of me says that there is that risk in falling in a wrong manner and during pregnancy, any risk should be avoided....

guess it depends on what school of thought you come from.... I personally would probably do it, as part of a tour...

I probably wouldn't go just to be on the safe side. I have 3 kids and I wouldn't have done it when I was pregnant. We were there 1 1/2 weeks ago and it wasn't terribly difficult to climb but your center of balance is off (even if your belly isn't too big), plus you could slip and the water is really cold, so that sudden shift in temperature would concern me as well. That may sound silly but I believe its better to be safe than sorry.

We stayed at the RIU and the food is pretty good. St. Annes (the main buffet) is good with a ton of variety. I think you will enjoy it there a lot. It was very relaxing for me.

Hi jinalov14,

"I am 3.5 months pregnant and I am very interested in the dunns river falls excursion but I question its safety. Those that have been there, is it safe and worth going given my situation?"

IMHO I would not reccomend anyone pregnant to do the dunns river fall excursion.

"BTW for those that have stayed in RIU ocho rios hows the food and entertainment at the hotel"

I found the food to be pretty good. The entertainment on the other hand, lacked the real Jamaican flavor I had grown use to. My Riu experience reminded me of being on a large cruise ship docked on land.

Keep in mind, this was just My experience.

Respectfully,

Jamaica4u

the more i think about it, the more i think it's probably not worth the risk... although honestly, probably pretty small, a risk is a risk, and if god forbid something was to happen (related to the climb or not) you'd probably never forgive yourself... that would be the part that would make me personally not recommend it....

you could still go and plop yourself in the sea at the bottom while your significant other climbs (there's a nice little waterfall at the bottom for photo op)....

and make a trip back post-baby to do the climb.

better yet, discuss with your practioner and your decision...

Chelle

NO way should you risk it. Yes it is safe enough for a non-pregnant person but you only need to slip and what a price you could pay! - really not worth the risk. I slipped and really bruised my leg and chest - no it was no life threatening and I am still glad I done it BUT I was not pregnant and anything could have happened if I was!!

Ummm...ok.

My wife did it 4 months pregnant just a couple months ago and she was just fine.

It isn't like Dunn's is difficult or anything. If you are confident in your physical abilities at the moment and you aren't having balance problems (my cousin struggled with balance when just walking with her first child), you will be fine.

For our first child, who is 13 months old, my wife taught full-on aerobics in a high school through 7 months. For this one, she is planning on doing the same.

As with anything when you are pregnant, only you and your physician can answer that question. The rocks are slippery, you are being pulled or pushed up as part of a group which means someone could fall on you or pull you down. The water is rushing down and it is cold. There is a path that you can walk up next to the falls.

Personally, I would take the tour, if at any point you feel that its too much you can always walk up the path at the side. The falls are so pretty, even if you get there and dont want to climb you can always take the path and take lots of photos of your other half as he clambers up :)

vickygene,

You are only a part of a group if you want to be. I would personally rather not do it at all than do it as part of those silly chain gangs.

I have done Dunn's River three or four times. This past trip was my wife's first. In our four previous trips to the island together, we never made it to Dunn's, so she was looking forward to doing it long before she even knew she was pregnant.

We walked the falls together and I helped her as we went. We stopped at various pools and swam. We went wherever we wanted to. We both had a great time and my wife is very glad she went.
