$460m eco-tourism attraction to open in May in Ocho Rios Carl Gilchrist, Observer staff reporter gilchristc@jamaicaobserver.com Friday, February 08, 2008 "The multi-million-dollar joint venture eco-tourism attraction between cruise shipping company Carnival Corporation and local investors is set to come on stream in another three months in St Ann. The US$6.5-million (J$460-m) Rainforest Bobsled Jamaica at Mystic Mountain, is being developed by Mystic Mountain Limited, and is to open in Ocho Rios in May this year. Mystic Mountain, a partnership between Rainforest Aerial Trams and Jamaican businessmen Horace A Clarke and Michael N Drakulich, who is also an attorney-at-law, said in a release that Carnival Corporation and the Development Bank of Jamaica are playing a significant role in the project by providing additional funding. The first phase of the project, located on the outskirts of the resort town of Ocho Rios, between Dunn's River Falls and the town proper, is spread over 100 acres and will feature several attractions, among them Bobsled Jamaica, Rainforest Sky Explorer, Rainforest Zip-line Canopy Tour, Jamaica Railway Station, Mystic Pavilion, and Walking Trails. .........." That could be interesting...as long as it could avoid being cheesy (a la Disney) and focus more on the eco-adventure aspect.

I agree Easton. | ||||||

Of course, I will be in Trelawny in April and this opens (or is supposed to open) in May. Is there really any way this would be open in May? Has this project beein going on for a while or something?

We walked to Dunns River falls when we were there last week. Noticed that they were building a road up the hill to somewhere on the south side of the highway. They had just finished a retaining wall at the base of the road - and the road was still very rudimentary - ie. carved in dirt basically. Guess that doesn't necessarily mean that the attraction at the top of this road isn't close to being finished... but if I was a betting person... I would say no.

For those who are close by in May and after, please report back.

A toast to my good friend Mike Drakulich for pulling this one off despite years of frustration and disappointment. That this project came to fruition - and in such a good, ecologically sound way - is a testament to the perseverance amd commitment of the conceptualizers.

I'll be at the Starfish in mid-July, so hopefully it is open by then. If so, I will definately check it out.

We stopped right under what I think is part of the zip line today? If so, wow... a lot of money is being spent. Just outside of Ocho Rios on the West side of town & just below the entrance to Dunns River... I can tell that they are definately gonna give Chukka Cove a run for their money for business from all the cruise ship tourists...

Frosty, Thanks for the update. ONE LOVE!!
|
This is a well put together and well-financed project, and maximum respect to Mike Drakulich for protecting the environment while at the same time adding a unique attraction to the island's offerings.
