Just wondering if anybody knows if there's any deep sea fishing in Ocho Rios? Can anyone point me in the right direction of where to go and of the cost affiliated with it? Many thanx in advance!

There must be some kind of deep sea fishing in OR because we booked through sandals and they offer it as an excursion. But I have posted this item a few times and no one on this board can elaborate on it. So if nothing else, my reply will move this post back to the top of the forum. I would love if someone had some real information.

I can give you the going rates in Jamaica to charter a deep sea fishing boat. $450 for a half day (4 hour trip) $800 for a full day (8 hour trip)

Sorry I do not know any captains in Ochi only Mo Bay. Perhaps someone else on here may know of someone.

Yes. Marlin, Tuna, Snapper, shark, dolphin fish (but I was told its not actually a dolphin just called that). Peter Charley is the best captain out of Mo Bay. He has a knack for finding the fish.

Through Sandals we are offered a deep sea fishing tour for $180-220 per person. I think my fi will be doing it while I get pampered in the spa.

Please let us readers know about it when you return. We have a very long wait before we go, but part of our group definitely wants to fish and so I would love to give them a report. I have fished the last three years in Mexico so I think I will opt for the spa also!

Unless you get onto a new, large boat out of a large marina and go WAY out into deep water to do some trolling, deep sea fishing in Jamaica is not much like anywhere else.

In general, the waters off the coast of Jamaica are pretty over-fished (necessitating the need to go way off the coast and fish in deep water) and the boats are usually not what you might expect for a deep sea trip.

I am not saying this as a negative....far from it. I just don't want people to expect Key West or Bahamas-style fishing in Jamaica and then come home disappointed. If you just want to relax on the water, shoot the breeze with a Jamaican captain, and maybe pull in some fish then totally go for it. If you are looking for brand new 40 foot boats, air-conditioned cabins, fancy skybridges, and endless fish then you may be better off at a bar.

Personally, In Jamaica, I am fine going out in a small dug-out boat with a small motor, a cooler of Stripes, a friendly captain, etc., all knowing full well that we may very well not catch anything larger than my hand.

easton,

I think you might be fishing in the wrong spots with the wrong captain. Give Captain Peter Charley a try. He competes internationally as well as locally. Like anywhere you just have to know who to look for. Real nice boat and he always seems to catch the big one, although there is no guarantee anywhere with anyone. I do agree you have to go off shore quite a bit but thats what deep sea fishing is about.

I may have to check him out, Jamerican!

I have fished in both the Keys and Jamaica, but only as I described in Jamaica (A rasta in a little boat with a cooler out of Port Morant).

I met some people on the beach on our last trip who were very disappointed from a trip(even through a tour company)--they felt they were seriously mislead.

I guess that just goes to show you how important the research is!

I have only even see big fishing boats in Mobay and Kingston....but its not like I was always looking, I suppose!

:)

Jamerican,

Do you have any contact information for Captain Peter?
