Getting to Boston Beach |
|
Hello! I'm going to be flying into Kingston on March 7, 2008. I'm going to be trying to get to Boston Beach and I'm just wondering what the best way to do that is. I've found car rentals for about $58 which is 1/3 the price the hotel I'm staying at wanted to charge me. I was also considering taking one of the buses or route taxis, but was just concerned with whether or not they'll be running when I get in (6PM). I've also considered just staying at a hostel in Kingston, probably Leighton House or something and then leaving on one of the buses or taxis during the day and hope to hitch a ride out to Boston Beach. What would you all recommend? Thanks for your help! |

I'd stay in Kingston that night because it will take about 3 hours to get to Boston and it gets dark around 6:30 - it'll probably be dark when you get out of the airport. The folks at Leighton house or wherever can advise you as to the best route to get to Boston in the morning. Enjoy the beach, and the jerk!

Hi, me & my two girlfriends just came and stayed in Boston Bay Beach over the Thanksgiving break. We also flew in at 6:30 pm. through the Kingston airport. We used a recommended taxi driver from this website. His name is Warren; he was prompt, courteous and reliable. I thought the drive was better because it was at night (no traffic)! You can email him at wgam84@yahoo.com, I'm sure he will answer all your questions or reservations that you have. I'm glad that we chose to drive at night because we took care of all our traveling in one day. In the morning we could do whatever because we arrived safe at our destination.

i too can vouch for Warren... he's a sweetie! I think his transfer rate is reasonable too.... I won't quote it as it wasn't him who carried me from Kingston... his phone number (unless he's changed it recently, I havent' spoke to him in a couple months and he's probably a little upset with me!!) is 876-823-4342 my suggestion for this transport might be a pricey one for you, but WELL WELL worth it for the experience.... Spend the night in Kingston, get someone (Warren) to pick you up in the morning.... Ask for the transfer thru the mountains (through Constant Springs Rd Junction Pass...) it's really amazingly beautiful and is, by far, one of my most memorable experiences from my last Jamaica trip... if you are not planning a blue mountain hike, this is one great way to see just some of the real beauty Jamaica has to offfer... takes a little longer and the transfer price is a little more, but IMO well worth the expense.. Going around St Thomas way is the easier/shorter way (although roads are probably much worse than when i went this summer (before Dean hit)), but I don't think it can compare in beauty. I would NOT rent a car for these parts... 1) the roads are beyond horrendous... pot holes large enough for small goats to sleep in (and they do), uneven surfaces, washouts are common, some narrow bridges, steep drop offs, and you share these roads with crazy drivers and local wildlife (above mentioned goats, dogs, cows etc.), not for the weak of heart.. oh, and they drive on the other side of the road... all and all, not highly recommended for an driver inexperienced in these parts... and 2) the kicker, the insurance costs are upwards of 1000USD... buses/route taxis, probably not an option if you have any amount of luggage that can't fit on your lap... route taxis typically only run short, limited routes so much transfering would be involved... the maxitaxis (large vans type buses) do run the route straight thru to Port Antonio, i believe (and with much efficiency, we were passed by at least 2 or 3 on our way), but they are typically well cramped and would have no or limited room for luggage... only consider this option if you are backpacking it, with rather small bags you wouldn't mind holding on your lap or at your feet.... not sure if you've rode in the local transportation in Jamaica before, but I can say that on many occassions I've had to literally sit on someone's lap (they pack route taxi's up 5 in the back, 3 in the front) and buses are often the same... the person you are smushed up against may not have the same concepts of personal hygine as you (sorry, it happens)... they are awesome for short jaunts into town and whatnot, but not my idea of a fun way to spend 3-4+ hours of my life... splurge on a private, airconditioned transfer for this one :) Chelle
