I'm planning to go to a conference in Santa Domingo, and trying to fit in a couple of days diving beforehand. La Romana looks like someplace I would enjoy diving, but is there anyplace decent to stay other than all-inclusive resorts? I'm not interested in the resort scene at all, as I would rather find local restaurants to eat at and I hate lying around by the pool. So, are there any ordinary (comfortable, safe but not resort-style) hotels that are convenient to dive operators and local restaurants, or some other area to go to (maybe Boca Chica) that would better suit my preferences?

I've stayed a couple of times at a guesthouse in the village of Bayahibe which I love called Villa Iguana. The most recent stay was 10 days in January. I am just finishing up the album of pictures from that stay, but I have an older album posted at travel.webshots.com/album/560687365DHtOnE In the album coming shortly I have pictures of a bunch of restaurants along the beach and coast, and there is a food stand on every other corner in town selling everything from fried chicken to local favourites like pig's feet.

There are a variety of accommodations at Villa Iguana too, ranging from a very standard room to a more spacious room to a one bedroom apartment (my preferred room) to a penthouse suite which has its own mini pool and private rooftop deck. You can get breakfast on-site and then take care of your own needs for the other meals.

For diving, you've selected well to be looking at the La Romana area, but I would certainly be focusing on Bayahibe or Dominicus rather than the city of La Romana . Within Bayahibe there are a number of dive operators for you to deal with handy to your accommodation too. I like Seavis Bayahibe, but you can also look into the offerings of Scuba Fun and Casa Daniel.

I hope it is excellent for you!

Do you still need an info or am I too late for this? I live in Bayahibe and can give you some tips. Let me know if you are still interested
