Have been reading about the airlines cutting back flights in Sept but didn't pay much attention till I went on line to check flights for our son from Dulles to St Croix. American is cutting the flights to St Croix from 8 to 2 daily. You can no longer fly direct from Dulles to San Juan which is ridiculous. You go via Dallas. One way was via Miami with a four hour lay over there. UGH !! What used to be a five hour trip is now about 10 and more expensive. Just for the heck of it I checked AXA. One flight was Dulles to San Juan via Dallas. Over night in San Juan and take the 7:59 PM American eagle to AXA. Took 34 hours and was over $800 !!! Going via St Martin wasn't much better. Hardly any direct flights anymore. Then I checked Provo in the Turks and Caicos and the same thing. Most flights took all day and involved an overnight at least in one direction. Expect this will discourage a lot of travelers and have as big impact on Caribbean Tourism. Takes the fun out of vacationing in the Caribbean. Shame.

HowardC-

I couldn't agree more. With the way things are going you need an extra day on the front and rear end of your vacation to allow for an entire day if not more of travel. We were very lucky this year on our return flight from AXA to Mpls. I was able to get a 5:30pm flight out-landing in Mpls. at Midnight.

I've never been able to leave that late in the day before.

Hello HOward: Yep, to be blunt it sucks. It has become even more cumbersome for me to make it from the west. I dont see any relief soon either. Maybe it will make me appreciate Carib even more. Or like you said it might just take the fun out of it.

Howard -- not just Dulles. We live in the District and also have BWI as an option. All AA flights from there to SJU also gone. Our only options are Miami and New York. I'm just sick about it.

It's the entire Caribbean. SJU is going to reap the rewards of many long layovers. And American Eagle better be ready for their season. As a travel agent and AA FF, I am disgusted, concerned and hopeful all at the same time.

Hi MaryGG--One thing I did was look at AXA via SXM.. Get this--Jet Blue from Dulles at 6:10 AM--Fly to NY JFK(Wrong Direction ???)--3 1/2 hour layover. Jet Blue to SXM arriving at 2:42 Then you have to do the ferry etc. Well over a 12 hour day. All that for $483. It's the pits. We lived in Fairfax for 28 years and you could get to anywhere in the Caribbean fairly quickly from Dulles THose were the good old days. Makes me glad we're on St Croix where you can island hop quickly and cheaply--1/2 hour to Anguilla.

It won't help a lot of you but DAE has non stop flights from Curacao to Sint Maarten. That is how I will get to AXA.

HowardC ~ There is an AA flight from DCA via Miami into SXM. We paid $83something r/t for two with taxes. The flight leave around 7am and you're in SXM around 3:10 p.m. Not bad.

This is new to us since we've always traveled from BWI to AXA.

Jetblue (which is quite awesome I might add) flies from NY to SJ-with a short layover from Dulles(IAD).  It sure beats going all the way to Dallas.  For the trip to Dallas-you could be in SJ!        You may also want to consider flying into St. Thomas, then American Eagle or ferry to St. Croix.  Flights are like that all over-the worse part, is after you buy tickets, and then they notify you that they've changed them on you-even worse!!!

I see Airtran has started service from BWI-SJU with a layover in Atlanta. Interesting, although still along travel day.
