This hostel has so much potential, it's just a shame its a so neglected Very cold, no heaters in any rooms. Free shuttle advertised only starts from 9.15am, no good for the popular early morning ferry to the South Island. Always running out of paper towels in the toilets. Kitchen needs a serious re-vamp or at least a good clean... more

Sadly we had no alternative but to spend 3 nights here as Wellington accommodation was completely full due to a number of 'Rock Concerts' that were going on over the weekend. The 'Lodge' was according to Wellington City Council supposed to advise us of the possibility of a 'very noisy stay' due to the concerts, that was the first 'joke'... more

We stayed two nights at Rowenas. The hostel is filthy, very poorly maintained, the washroom is dirty; the maintenance staff consists of two grumpy old men. The internet is extremely slow but they charge the standard price. If you are leaving early (before 7:30), get the key deposit the night before because nobody is at reception early. However, people staying... more

I stayed at Rowena's this past December and it was one of our best nights in the North Island. Yes, the hostel is a little bit on the grungy side but there was such a strong sense of community and everybody wanted to get to know everybody. My friend and I were in the dining area for hours chatting it... more

Where to start.......! The double room was like a prison cell. The room was dirty, in desperate need of decoration and very unwelcoming. The door lock looked like it had been slipped a few times and didn't give us reassurance. The kitchen was tiny, with no oven or grill. You wouldn't want to use them anyway because it was filthy... more

I stayed in a double room here for 2 nights. The main motivation for staying here was the location and the free car-parking. I was not expecting much at $40 per night, but I still was disappointed. The room was small and very basic, with an old bed and cupboard and 4 bare walls. The floor was dirty but the... more

We stayed here in April. It's recommended in Lonely Planet The place is fifthy. The toilets are unclean, the bins are overflowing with sanitary products. The hallway is littered with rubbish, food and toilet paper. The cleaner visits daily and pushes the dirt/ rubbish/ food/ paper into a corner. Your feet stick to the floor in the kitchen. We brought... more
