I have booked many a stay via an establishment's website. I typically check reviews, but I don't always pay attention to them. This is one instance in which I wished I had. Having considered the high tariff of £90 B&B would reflect the quality, I arrived late afternoon to be advised through the intercom system "I'm setting up for breakfast - you'll have to wait in the guest lounge". August and room freezing with no heating, lights that don't work, shower awful and television with no remote control. Carpets in the loo. Really old fashioned. Staff good but not for us. Stayed for 4 nights. York is fantastic with really good restaurants but there are better places to stay more

Visited wonderful York for 2 days/nights in autumn 2006. However, this guest house, Holmwood House, has been very overrated by TripAdvisor reviewers. We stayed here for 3 nights midweek in November. The hotel is in ideal location for the city centre. About 15-20 mins walk into the city centre. There are also a few local pubs nearby so you don't always have to go into the city centre. One night we decided to get a taxi into the city centre and back... more
