We stayed for four nights and had the attic room, which has brilliant veiws over the city centre. The room was nice and spacious, with a very good sized en-suite bathroom. The hotel is just 10 minutes walk to the city wall, and has a good sized car park for those that need it. Breakfast had a good selection so... more

We found the Holmwood warm and comfortable, the breakfasts delicious, the staff friendly and the whole establishment clean. As owners of a 4* B&B ourselves we know what we're talking about. Claims of a 10-minute walk to centre of York are a bit optimistic unless you're a sprinter, but it's still pretty convenient. Only complaint is that rooms to the... more

Booked last minute for some Christmas shopping and as York was quite busy didn't expect to get such a good deal. Stayed on a midweek 3 nights for the price of 2 basis. Didn't check the reviews before I went and feel this would have put me off if I had. We had a good experience here. The hotel is only... more

I have booked many a stay via an establishment's website. I typically check reviews, but I don't always pay attention to them. This is one instance in which I wished I had. I booked Holmwood house based on the content of their website and the attributions of quality recognition that it represented. The reality was, in my opinion, something less.... more

Having considered the high tariff of £90 B&B would reflect the quality, I arrived late afternoon to be advised through the intercom system "I'm setting up for breakfast - you'll have to wait in the guest lounge". Eventually a tense-looking lady went through check-in process, no eye contact, no smile - I assumed that breakfast set up hadn't gone too... more

August and room freezing with no heating, lights that don't work, shower awful and television with no remote control. Carpets in the loo. Really old fashioned. Staff good but not for us. Stayed for 4 nights. York is fantastic with really good restaurants but there are better places to stay more

We stayed here for 3 nights in May and had a very pleasant stay - the staff were very friendly, cheerful and helpful. We had room 12 (from memory!), it had a large four poster bed which was heaven -soooo comfortable and the duvet was heavy and cosy - it also smelled lovely & freshly clean everyday and i struggled... more

Visited wonderful York for 2 days/nights in autumn 2006. However, this guest house, Holmwood House, has been very overrated by TripAdvisor reviewers. Bad things: 1-Dated/frayed/faded room decor that wasn't even nice in the first place. 2-woefully out of date, if not unsafe, bathroom that required a step down, then up from bedroom to 1950's style lav and tiny shower. 3-Thin... more

We stayed here for 3 nights midweek in November. The hotel is in ideal location for the city centre. About 15-20 mins walk into the city centre. There are also a few local pubs nearby so you don't always have to go into the city centre. One night we decided to get a taxi into the city centre and back... more

I must admit that we got a bit carried away by the hotel website and earlier reviews on Trip Advisor. I would agree with the previous entry, the place is a bit tired in places and pricey for what you get. Stayed for 2 nights over the weekend in room B1 at £110 a night. Decor was a bit tired... more
