My husband's family went to LBI every summer, and we have continued the tradition with our two children. It is a fairly close drive to us from Maryland (4 hours or less) , has beautiful, clean beaches, no tall condo or hotel buildings, just enough additional attractions and shopping for rainy days, and is safe and family oriented. I grew up going to LBI every single summer since I was a baby... I have so many special memories. To the poster who said do something about the biting flies..well, unfortunately, sometimes that happens on a day the wind blows from the mainland. LBI is expensive but it keeps the riff raff out. No big hotels which is great... more

In response to the last post, the biting flies are a function of the wind blowing from the west. Normally on LBI, there are ocean breezes. Long Beach Island is the best of the Jersey Shore - beautiful beaches, quiet, not honky tonk. Granted it's pricey, but I think it is worth it. more

I just spent a week on LBI, nice area, however, you really need to due something about the biting flies, kept us off the beach a lot. Don't think I'll be coming back next year. Prices for everything (food, souvenirs, etc) were very high. Considering the cost of gas to get there it was a very expensive trip. I noticed... more
