The Fenelon Place Elevator, in Dubuque, IA, aka the 4th Street Elevator, is the world's shortest and steepest railway. It's, according the their specs, 296 feet in length and elevates passengers 189 feet to the top. The ride in both directions is fun, but the view at the top is amazing! It is an incredible view of the Mississippi River... more

The steep ride to the top takes a couple of minutes and costs about as much as public transport. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the brief ride and view from the top by day or by night. The history of the cable car is also worth learning about. more

I love the ride up the hill...it's a little nerve wracking because it's old, but that's all part of the fun. Once you're up the hill the view is amazing! I... more

We've ridden the Fenelon Place Elevator each of the past two years. It's a quick ride 300 feet up to the top of the bluff in little white, very old, 8 person cars. Quite a nice view at the top of Dubuque and the Mississippi as well as Illinois and Wisconsin. There used to be a fair number of these... more
